It was founded in France in response to the Biafran War. The organization is known in most of the world by its localized name or simply as MSF; in Canada and the United States the name Doctors Without Borders is commonly used. In 2015 over 30,000, mostly local, doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, logistical experts, water and sanitation engineers and administrators provided medical aid in over 70 countries. These doctors and nurses decided to volunteer their time to solve issues of world health. Private donors provide about 90% of the organization's funding, while corporate donations provide the rest, giving MSF an annual budget of approximately US$750 million. View more View less

Job Purpose

The SRH&R Advisor provides strategic, technical, and operational support to ensure the delivery of high-quality, safe, ethical, and people-centered sexual and reproductive health and rights services for women, adolescents, and young girls across MSF Ubuntu programs. The role ensures alignment with MSF International medical standards and MSF Ubuntu’s strategic priorities, with a strong focus on community engagement, local partnerships, sustainability, and rights-based care. The Advisor promotes the consistent integration of SRH&R—including Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and Safe Abortion Care (SAC)—across all projects and country programs.

This position will be hierarchically and functionally accountable to the Head of Health Programs Unit or relevant unit head.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic and Technical Leadership

  • Lead the development, implementation, and monitoring of SRH&R strategies aligned with MSF Ubuntu’s strategic priorities.
  • Ensure approaches are evidence-based, integrated, and adaptable to diverse contexts, with a strong community-based focus.
  • Develop and maintain technical guidance, tools, and protocols for SRH, including SGBV and SAC, in line with MSF standards.
  • Act as the technical focal point for quality of care and patient safety within SRH, ensuring risks in maternal, neonatal, and reproductive health are identified and mitigated.
  • Collaborate with Advocacy and Communications teams to define and advance SRH&R advocacy priorities.
  • Initiate and contribute to operational research and programmatic analysis in collaboration with Data Science and Epidemiology teams.
  • Contribute to the broader medical operational vision and strategy of MSF Ubuntu.

Program Support

  • Provide expert, evidence-based technical guidance to country programs and Med-Ops cell on SRH, SGBV, and SAC.
  • Support field teams in strengthening quality of care through structured quality improvement processes (e.g., MPDSR, mortality reviews, SRH indicator monitoring).
  • Promote effective data collection, analysis, and use for continuous improvement and learning.
  • Identify medical-operational challenges and propose practical, evidence-based solutions.
  • Support project design, reviews, and strategic planning with Country programs, Med-Ops cell, and Health Programs leadership.
  • Conduct briefings and debriefings for country teams and HQ staff.
  • Undertake regular or ad-hoc program visits in coordination with relevant medical leadership (Country MedCo, Med-Ops Cell, and Head of Health Programs Unit).

Representation and Coordination

  • Represent MSF Ubuntu within intersectional SRH, SOV/SGBV platform/community of practice (CoP), and relevant technical working groups.
  • Contribute to thematic initiatives and technical projects, including workshops and conferences.
  • Build and strengthen partnerships with local institutions and organizations to advance SRH&R care and innovation.

Capacity Building and People Management

  • Support recruitment, validation, mentoring, and development of midwives and talent pools, as required.
  • Collaborate with Learning & Development and technical platforms to strengthen training and knowledge sharing.
  • Develop and facilitate training materials and learning activities (workshops, webinars, CoPs).
  • Build the capacity of program teams on SRH, SGBV care standards, systems, and tools.
  • Participate as a facilitator in MSF Ubuntu and international MSF training courses on SRH, SGBV, and SAC when requested.

Qualifications

Education

  • Registered Midwife or a Medical Doctor with specialization in Obstetrics and Gynecology (Essential).
  • ALSO instructor certificate (Asset).
  • Fluency in spoken and written English (Essential); French (An Advantage).
  • Demonstrated experience in cross-cultural communication and collaboration.

Experience
