Role Overview
You will act as the in-house legal and compliance partner for a fast-growing special economic zone, supporting day-to-day operations across procurement, marketing, human resources, and data governance. Your work will directly shape how contracts are signed, campaigns are launched, employees are managed, and information is protected, ensuring every function stays legally sound while the business continues to expand. By translating complex Kenyan regulations into practical guidance for non-legal teams, you will help reduce risk without slowing down momentum on one of East Africa’s most ambitious mixed-use developments.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft, review, and negotiate supplier, vendor, and service agreements, with a focus on managing liability, delivery timelines, warranties, indemnities, and payment terms under Kenyan law.
- Oversee compliance for all marketing initiatives, including promotions, advertising, property launches, sponsorships, media partnerships, and public relations, ensuring alignment with competition, consumer protection, and data privacy rules.
- Provide legal guidance on employment contracts, internal policies, disciplinary actions, terminations, and employee disputes, while keeping HR practices aligned with Kenya’s labour and occupational safety legislation.
- Advise on the lawful collection, use, and storage of personal data across the business, particularly in marketing campaigns and HR processes, in line with the Data Protection Act.
- Act as a legal business partner to procurement, marketing, and HR teams, delivering practical advice on regulatory changes and emerging compliance requirements before they become issues.
- Maintain and improve contract templates, risk registers, and compliance frameworks, and ensure secure document management systems are used consistently across departments.
- Coordinate with regulators, auditors, and external counsel on legal and compliance matters, including investigations, audits, and dispute resolution.
- Design and deliver legal training sessions for managers and staff on labour law, workplace ethics, data handling, and other relevant legal topics.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor of Laws degree and admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, with a current practising certificate.
- At least seven years of post-qualification experience in corporate and commercial law, including substantial exposure to multi-functional legal support rather than a single practice area.
- Demonstrated expertise in contract drafting, negotiation, risk assessment, and cross-functional legal advisory work.
- Working knowledge of key Kenyan statutes, including the Data Protection Act, Competition Act, Kenya Information and Communications Act, Employment and labour laws, Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, NGO Coordination Act, and the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Act where applicable.
- Proven ability to manage complex workloads, prioritise competing demands, and maintain meticulous organisation in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, comfortable translating legal concepts into clear guidance for non-lawyers.
- A collaborative yet independent working style: equally effective as part of a team and when handling matters autonomously.
- Pragmatic, hands-on, and detail-oriented, with the maturity to exercise sound judgment under pressure and the flexibility to adapt as the business grows.
