Role Overview
This role sits within Kituo Cha Sheria’s Migration Justice and Governance programme, where you will help deliver legal aid and community empowerment to refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, stateless people, and survivors of trafficking and labour exploitation. You will split your time between direct client-facing legal support, behind-the-scenes case and project administration, and coordination with community paralegals, partners, and government stakeholders across initiatives such as the RAWI-EA coalition and the HAKI Mashinani/JVI partnership. Reporting to the Programme Officer/Legal Officer, you will contribute to every stage of programme delivery—from planning and logistics to donor reporting—so the organisation can continue advancing access to justice and social dignity.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the planning and delivery of legal aid clinics, mobile outreach, awareness forums, and trainings for forced migrants, host communities, and community or prison-based paralegals, including handling logistics and participant documentation.
- Assist with casework—screening clients, recording and updating case files, making referrals, preparing basic legal documents, and accompanying the Legal Officer to court or relevant follow-up appointments as needed.
- Provide accurate, confidential legal information and guidance to clients under supervision, ensuring every matter is handled professionally and ethically and suitable cases are escalated for litigation or intervention.
- Help manage programme data: collect and enter monitoring and evaluation information, conduct needs assessments and stakeholder consultations, and contribute accurate inputs for monthly, quarterly, and donor reports.
- Prepare project budgets, fund requisitions, and liquidation documents in line with financial procedures, and work with the finance team to keep expenditure accountable and transparent.
- Coordinate communication and engagement with local leaders, civil society organisations, courts, and government agencies, and represent the programme at community events and working group meetings when delegated.
- Support safeguarding and organisational learning by documenting success stories, case studies, and lessons learned, and by assisting with safeguarding awareness sessions for interns, volunteers, and paralegals.
- Maintain both physical and digital filing systems, draft correspondence, and support procurement and administrative tasks required for smooth field and office operations.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) from a recognised university; enrolment in or completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Law is an advantage, as is admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya or demonstrable progress toward admission.
- At least two years of relevant professional, internship, or pupillage experience, preferably in an NGO, legal aid, human rights, or migration-focused environment.
- Working knowledge of or genuine commitment to issues affecting refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, stateless individuals, trafficked persons, and other marginalised groups.
- Sound legal research and drafting skills, with the ability to produce clear client documents, reports, concept notes, and correspondence.
- Basic competence in data collection, data entry, reporting, and documentation, along with practical experience supporting donor-funded project activities such as budgeting and accountability.
- Strong organisational and administrative skills, including record-keeping, scheduling, and logistics coordination for events, trainings, and field visits.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with sensitivity to cultural, ethnic, gender, and identity differences and the ability to relate to clients and community members from diverse backgrounds.
- High integrity, discretion, and sound judgement when handling vulnerable or sensitive cases, plus the ability to prioritise multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to travel regularly to project sites, courts, partner meetings, and community areas, and to work as a reliable, cooperative member of multidisciplinary teams.
