Role Overview
This position is responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the company’s accounting records, with a strong focus on general ledger management, statutory tax compliance, banking relationships, and financial support for infrastructure-related projects. You will handle daily transaction recording, periodic closings, reconciliations, and tax submissions while collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders such as auditors, banks, and the Kenya Revenue Authority. Your work ensures that financial reporting remains reliable, audit-ready, and fully aligned with Kenyan regulations and company policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the day-to-day general ledger operations, including the timely and accurate posting of financial transactions across all business areas.
- Drive month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes by preparing journals, accruals, prepayments, provisions, depreciation schedules, and other required adjustments.
- Perform and document balance sheet reconciliations for bank accounts, receivables, payables, fixed assets, tax ledgers, and other critical accounts, investigating and clearing any discrepancies.
- Support the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, management reports, and supporting schedules for both internal and external stakeholders.
- File statutory tax returns through the KRA iTax platform, compute applicable taxes, ensure payments meet deadlines, and reconcile tax filings against the general ledger to identify and resolve variances.
- Liaise with KRA on queries, reviews, audits, and information requests, while keeping abreast of changes in Kenyan tax legislation and compliance requirements, including eTIMS.
- Handle corporate banking and treasury activities, including processing transactions on online banking platforms, monitoring cash positions, and following up on bank reconciliation items with financial institutions such as Stanbic Bank or Standard Chartered Bank.
- Support financial and tax aspects of infrastructure or project-based operations by reviewing contract terms, tracking project expenditure, and coordinating with procurement, operations, legal, and HR teams on payment and cost allocation matters.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
- At least 3–5 years of hands-on accounting experience, with substantial exposure to general ledger work, monthly closing routines, and financial reporting.
- Proven experience using the KRA iTax system for tax filings and a strong working knowledge of Kenyan tax laws and statutory reporting obligations.
- Familiarity with eTIMS and other KRA digital compliance tools is an added advantage.
- Practical experience with corporate banking platforms, online banking systems, and bank reconciliations within Kenya, ideally with major commercial banks like Stanbic or Standard Chartered.
- Prior experience in infrastructure, construction, transport, roads, energy, public-private partnerships, engineering, or similar sectors is highly desirable.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and hands-on experience with ERP or accounting software.
- CPA(K), ACCA, or an equivalent professional qualification (completed or in progress) is preferred.
- Excellent written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with KRA, banks, auditors, suppliers, and other external parties.
- Knowledge of Chinese is a plus but not required.
