Job Description

Role Overview

This is a hands-on field engineering position within the technology department, focused entirely on maintaining the health of MSAN nodes in the Nairobi network. The engineer works on site to keep power systems reliable, resolves faults quickly to meet availability targets, and manages the physical and logical setup, disconnection, and reconnection of ISDN and PSTN circuits when customers subscribe, relocate, or settle outstanding bills. The role matters because node downtime directly affects customer uptime, so the engineer is accountable for preserving service continuity while keeping operational costs within budget.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance on MSAN node power supplies and associated equipment to sustain high network availability and meet annual uptime targets.
  • Respond to power-related faults at assigned MSAN and switch sites, diagnosing root causes and implementing fixes within the agreed SLA timeframes.
  • Provide timely status updates to customers during service restoration, ensuring transparency and reducing complaints.
  • Carry out feasibility studies, installations, and reconfigurations for ISDN and PSTN circuits, including billing-related disconnections and reconnections after payment.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for customer setups, circuit records, and site visit outcomes.
  • Work within monthly fuel budgets, capture power meter readings, and submit them to finance by the required date each month.
  • Follow HSE guidelines, engineering standards, and legal regulations to keep work environments safe and compliant.
  • Monitor personal performance against KPIs such as fault resolution time, provisioning completion, and network cost targets, and recommend improvements.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or Higher Diploma in Telecommunications, Engineering, or a related technical discipline, supplemented by job-specific technology training.
  • 3–5 years of experience in the telecoms industry, with at least 1–2 years in a technical role within a large national network environment.
  • Demonstrated hands-on ability to install, test, and maintain power equipment used in telecom access nodes.
  • Strong routing and switching background with practical experience configuring routers and switches from multiple vendors; Cisco certification or another recognised IP networking credential is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of SIP and practical experience dealing with SIP providers.
  • Good understanding of MSAN architecture and PSTN/ISDN circuit provisioning, including disconnection and reconnection processes.
  • Excellent planning and prioritisation skills, with the ability to remain composed under pressure and manage multiple field assignments.
  • A team-oriented, self-motivated approach with a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Valid Kenyan driving licence and proficiency in MS Office tools for reporting and documentation.
