Role Overview
This position is responsible for keeping every residential security system at US government housing in Nairobi fully operational, from the moment a property is prepared for occupancy through its daily use. The technician works closely with the Assistant Regional Security Officer and the Regional Security Officer to inspect, install, troubleshoot, and repair alarms, sensors, and physical barriers, and also guides residents on how to use their equipment. The work directly safeguards official residences and ensures that mission personnel can live and work in secure, code-compliant spaces.
Key Responsibilities
- Test door contacts, passive infrared sensors, glass break detectors, panic buttons, and intercom systems in every residence prior to a new occupant moving in.
- Perform final quality inspections of contractor-installed safe-haven doors and perimeter grillwork, confirming that all work meets RSO residential security standards.
- Diagnose and repair malfunctioning alarm systems, including emergency fixes after power surges, lightning strikes, electrical faults, or burglaries.
- Coordinate with external contractors on safe-haven door, grillwork, and alarm installations, and review their invoices for accuracy and compliance.
- Support the make-ready process by installing or removing alarm systems, video cameras, and monitoring equipment when residences are occupied, vacated, or returned to landlords.
- Manage the issuance and stock of residential security hardware, maintaining an accurate inventory and preparing purchase orders for needed replacements.
- Deliver one-on-one tutorials and briefings to mission staff on how to operate their residential alarms and respond to security equipment alerts.
- Assist the ARSO/RSC with residential security surveys and equipment assessments, including projects to bring older homes up to current security standards.
Requirements & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- A minimum of two years of hands-on experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic security products, including alarm systems and sensors.
- Working knowledge of physical security construction techniques, such as masonry, metal grillwork, and safe-haven door installation.
- Practical troubleshooting ability for alarms, sensors, intercoms, and related monitoring hardware.
- Strong communication skills to coordinate with contractors, brief residents, and document inspections and service work.
- Must be eligible to obtain a security certificate or public trust security clearance.
