Job Description
Role Overview
This position sits at the heart of a fleet maintenance workshop, where the focus is on keeping a mixed commercial vehicle operation moving safely and efficiently. Each day involves hands-on work across trucks and trailers — carrying out scheduled upkeep, chasing down intermittent electrical faults, and stripping and rebuilding mechanical components when repairs are needed. The role matters because every vehicle returned to service on time directly supports the wider fleet’s availability, protects against roadside breakdowns, and avoids the cost and disruption of major component failures.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out routine and preventive maintenance inspections across the fleet, covering braking systems, steering, suspension, driveline components, and trailer electrical connections.
- Use advanced diagnostic software, vehicle scanners, and electrical test equipment to identify and resolve complex faults in engine management systems, wiring looms, CAN-bus communications, ABS, and ancillary electronic modules.
- Dismantle, inspect, repair, and rebuild mechanical and electrical components, replacing worn or damaged parts in line with manufacturer specifications and workshop safety standards.
- Diagnose intermittent or hard-to-find vehicle faults through a combination of system testing, circuit measurement, wiring diagram analysis, and structured root-cause reasoning rather than trial-and-error replacement.
- Perform road tests before and after repair work to verify that reported symptoms have been resolved and that vehicle handling, braking, and drivability are within normal parameters.
- Engage directly with drivers and clients to understand reported vehicle issues, explain diagnosed faults clearly, and suggest practical repair solutions that balance quality, cost, and vehicle downtime.
- Maintain accurate records of inspection findings, repairs performed, parts used, and any recurring fault patterns that may indicate a wider fleet issue.
- Work on a mixed range of vehicles including Mitsubishi, Isuzu, Scania, Mercedes Actros trucks, together with various trailer configurations, ensuring each unit meets operational and safety requirements before release.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A minimum Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, specifically with an Automotive focus, is required for this position.
- At least three years of hands-on experience working inside a fleet maintenance workshop environment, not only in general automotive repair.
- Strong mastery of diagnostic scanners, oscilloscopes, multimeters, and other electrical testing equipment, with the ability to interpret live data and fault codes accurately.
- Deep understanding of automotive electrical and electronic systems, including sensors, control modules, multiplexed communication circuits, and vehicle lighting and charging systems.
- Excellent troubleshooting and critical thinking skills, capable of breaking down complex fault symptoms into workable tests and verifying the root cause before beginning repairs.
- Solid mechanical repair competency across heavy commercial vehicle components, covering air brake systems, clutch and transmission work, wheel ends, and suspension hardware.
- Proven experience working on Mercedes Actros or Scania trucks is regarded as a strong advantage, as is prior exposure to Japanese-built trucks (Mitsubishi, Isuzu) and trailer units.
