Role Overview
This is a hands-on field engineering role for someone who is comfortable on rooftops, masts and customer premises, installing and aligning the outdoor radios that carry broadband traffic back to the operator's core network. Day to day, the technician surveys sites, mounts and tunes wireless equipment, reads RF performance data and tracks down the faults that take subscriber links offline. The work matters because every customer connection rests on precise physical alignment and clean radio conditions — reliable installation and fast fault recovery are what keep the network earning instead of being repaired.
Key Responsibilities
- Assemble and mount wireless radios, sector antennas and subscriber CPE units on masts, poles, rooftops and building walls, including cable routing, grounding and weatherproof sealing of all outdoor connections.
- Carry out site surveys to confirm clear line of sight between endpoints, then adjust azimuth, tilt and elevation until the link reaches its required performance target.
- Use field meters and radio management tools to read signal strength, noise floor, signal-to-noise ratio, channel width and interference levels, and rework channel plans where conditions demand it.
- Diagnose and repair wireless link faults — failed radios, damaged or waterlogged cable runs, signal degradation, PoE and power problems — during both scheduled visits and emergency call-outs.
- Replace faulty hardware promptly and run routine preventive inspections so that degrading equipment is caught before subscribers notice an outage.
- Explain faults and repairs to residential and business customers in plain language and answer their questions while on site.
- Log installations, signal readings, parts swapped and maintenance tickets accurately in the operations system, and escalate complex backhaul or tower structural issues to senior network engineers.
- Keep field toolkits, test meters, cable stock and spare radios inventoried and serviceable, and follow working-at-height, electrical and equipment safety rules on every deployment.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Certificate, diploma or recognised technical certification in telecommunications, ICT, computer networking, electrical/electronics engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Practical field experience deploying and troubleshooting fixed wireless broadband networks, including equipment mounting, cable termination and link commissioning.
- Hands-on familiarity with Ubiquiti radio families such as airMAX, Rocket, PowerBeam and LiteBeam, along with sector antennas and wireless CPE devices.
- Working knowledge of RF fundamentals: frequency bands and channel planning, Fresnel zone clearance, RSSI and SNR interpretation, and interference management.
- Fault-finding ability that spans the physical layer, the radio link and the customer's own local network setup.
- Clear communication, a team-oriented approach and a genuine customer care attitude.
- Physical fitness for outdoor and rooftop work, with the ability to handle ladders and mounting hardware safely.
- Availability for on-site shift operations and emergency call-outs. Stations are based in Karatina, Tharaka and Nairobi.
What We Offer / Why Join
- A monthly salary of KSh 20,000.
- Full-time, field-based employment with placement at one of three regional stations: Karatina, Tharaka or Nairobi.
- Exposure to the complete wireless deployment cycle — installation, alignment, preventive maintenance and fault resolution — rather than a single narrow task.
