Role Overview
This is a hands-on plumbing role based within a military garrison environment in Kenya, where you will be responsible for keeping all water, heating, drainage, and fire-suppression systems operational across the site. Day to day, you will install, inspect, service, and repair pipework, pressurised equipment, and water treatment plant, while also taking the lead on Legionella sampling and ensuring compliance with strict military safety regulations. Your work directly protects the health and safety of personnel by maintaining clean, chlorinated water supplies and safe drainage networks in a high-risk setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, service, and repair all pipework, fittings, water appliances, boilers, pressure vessels, and pumps, including high-pressure fire water systems and networks.
- Maintain drainage and sewerage systems to ensure they remain fully operational, carrying out hazardous work safely and in line with confined spaces procedures.
- Carry out water treatment and testing to achieve compliant chlorine levels across the distribution network, and ensure all water treatment plants are consistently functional.
- Disinfect, clean, and inspect showerheads as part of routine water hygiene management.
- Assemble pipe sections and fittings using couplings, clamps, bolts, cement, and solvent; cut openings in structures with hand and power tools; and test systems using pressure gauges to locate and resolve leaks.
- Diagnose faults, order spares, and maintain logbooks for all heating, water, and drainage equipment, ensuring records are accurate and up to date.
- Identify, isolate, and make safe faulty or dangerous installations in compliance with MOD Safety Rules and Procedures (SRPs), and organise repairs accordingly.
- Act as the department lead for Legionella sampling, accompany external contractors during testing regimes, and respond to 24-hour emergency call-outs as required.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Trade Test 1 in plumbing as a minimum, plus at least three years of practical experience in plumbing installation, repairs, and maintenance.
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of installation and maintenance methods for heating, water, and drainage systems, including the use of motorised and hand tools.
- Understanding of occupational hazards, standard safety practices, and heavy equipment operation techniques in a plumbing context.
- Ability to supervise junior tradesmen, monitor progress, provide constructive feedback, and work effectively under changing priorities and uncertainty.
- Working knowledge of MOD SRPs, the Petroleum Safety Rule Book, and confined spaces requirements (JSP 375 Vol 3 Ch 6), with in-date breathing apparatus and medical fitness for confined space work.
- Willingness to participate in emergency response on a 24-hour basis, including evenings, weekends, and holidays when required.
- Effective communication skills in English and Kiswahili, both oral and written, and the ability to interpret and apply work procedures in line with organisational policies.
- Desirable: valid Kenyan driving licence (Class B, C1, and C), experience with solar water heating installation and maintenance, and Legionella hazard awareness.
