Pediatrician, Outreach Clinics

Role Overview

This role places a qualified paediatric specialist at the centre of a busy hospital department, combining direct clinical care with academic leadership. Day to day, the post holder will assess and treat children from admission through discharge, respond to emergencies, and guide junior doctors, residents, and medical students. The position is essential to maintaining high clinical standards and ensuring that both routine and complex paediatric cases receive timely, evidence-based care.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive clinical assessments of paediatric patients, including taking detailed histories, conducting physical examinations, and interpreting laboratory and radiology investigations to reach accurate diagnoses.
• Lead daily ward rounds, closely monitor each child's progress, and revise treatment plans in collaboration with the wider care team.
• Prioritise and manage critically ill children, initiating urgent and potentially life-saving procedures such as resuscitation when clinically indicated.
• Communicate openly with patients, families, and caregivers, providing clear explanations of conditions, wellness education, and appropriate referrals for ongoing support.
• Consult with relevant specialists and departments to design the most effective treatment strategy for complex or multi-system cases.
• Supervise and teach residents, SHO/clinical officers, and medical students through bedside coaching, formal assessments, and structured mentorship.
• Contribute to the departmental teaching programme by reviewing syllabi, participating in examinations, and attending Residency Training Committee and faculty meetings.
• Work alongside nursing and ward staff to ensure all treatment equipment is functional, reduce clinical errors, and promote efficient resource utilisation.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Master of Medicine in Paediatrics from a recognised institution.
• Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) or an equivalent medical degree.
• Full registration and a valid practising licence with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.
• Current certification in Emergency Paediatric Life Support (EPLS).
• Demonstrated clinical competence in managing paediatric emergencies, inpatient care, and routine paediatric presentations.
• Strong teaching, communication, and interpersonal skills to effectively engage patients, families, and multi-level trainees.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and remain composed under pressure.
