Role Overview
This position places a qualified nutrition specialist directly within Mombasa County’s early childhood development ecosystem, focusing on the health and dietary wellbeing of learners in ECDE centres. The day-to-day work involves moving between county schools to conduct nutritional screenings, track growth outcomes, and support the operational side of school feeding efforts. Your assessments will directly inform how the county adjusts its feeding menu, identifies at-risk children, and measures the impact of its nutrition programmes.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct full nutritional assessments for ECDE learners across all sub-counties in Mombasa, including anthropometric measurements such as height, weight, and mid-upper arm circumference, plus dietary intake reviews.
- Compile and maintain accurate individual learner records, flagging cases of malnutrition, undernutrition, or micronutrient deficiencies for immediate attention.
- Support county-level implementation of school feeding programmes by verifying meal quality, portion sizes, and adherence to nutritional guidelines at ECDE centres.
- Contribute to monitoring and evaluation activities by collecting field data, preparing progress reports, and assisting with quarterly programme reviews.
- Offer practical guidance to ECDE teachers and caregivers on age-appropriate nutrition, food hygiene, and feeding practices that can be sustained locally.
- Liaise with health facilities and community health volunteers to ensure referred learners receive follow-up care and that their progress is tracked over time.
- Participate in county nutrition awareness campaigns, school health days, and parent outreach sessions as needed.
- Carry out any additional tasks assigned by the supervising officer to support the broader county nutrition work plan.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics from a recognised institution.
- Practical proficiency in computer applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and basic data entry or reporting tools.
- Must be an unemployed Kenyan graduate with no current formal employment contract.
- Must not have retired or exited from formal employment previously.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact clearly with young learners, teachers, parents, and county officials.
- Ability to work independently in the field and manage a caseload of multiple ECDE centres across Mombasa County.
- Demonstrated understanding of child nutrition, growth monitoring, and community-based feeding strategies.
