Role Overview
This is a combined clinical and academic appointment within the Department of Family Medicine, pairing a full-time faculty position with leadership of the Adult Emergency Medicine programme. The post holder carries day-to-day responsibility for the standard of emergency and urgent care delivered in the Accident and Emergency Department, while also shaping how the next generation of emergency medicine diplomates and residents are trained. Success in the role depends on balancing hands-on patient care, supervision and performance management of junior doctors, and an active contribution to research and scholarly work in primary and emergency care.
Key Responsibilities
- Set the clinical direction for the Accident and Emergency Department, giving senior guidance on safe, patient-centred and evidence-informed emergency practice.
- Deliver first-contact, urgent and emergency clinical care to patients presenting to the department.
- Lead the recruitment, induction, probation review and, where necessary, disciplinary processes for Senior House Officers.
- Manage the performance and educational development of Senior House Officers, including appraisals and progression planning.
- Confirm that every doctor in the department holds a valid licence and complete the privileging process required for them to practise.
- Drive compliance with regulatory requirements and accreditation standards applicable to emergency medicine services and training.
- Work with consultants, clinical colleagues and the wider care team to integrate patient care activities, share key performance indicators and strengthen institutional quality improvement and patient outcomes.
- Contribute to emergency medicine research and scholarly output, and coordinate educational programmes in the Accident and Emergency Department for residents and emergency medicine diplomates.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Master of Medicine in Emergency Medicine, or an equivalent qualification.
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB).
- Current registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) as a Specialist.
- A minimum academic position of Senior Instructor, with at least two years of post-training experience.
- Demonstrated healthcare leadership experience within an Emergency Medicine Department.
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, with strong written and verbal communication.
- Capacity to prioritise work independently, think critically and solve problems under pressure.
- Demonstrated honesty, integrity, compassion and respect for diversity, with sound application of ethical principles.
