Director of Music Ministry

Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Director of Music Ministry to lead, develop, and manage all aspects of music within our parish. This role oversees the direction of performing musical ensembles, coordinates worship music across all services and events, and ensures the long-term sustainability of our musical resources. The ideal candidate will combine exceptional musical talent with strong leadership, administrative acumen, and a deep understanding of liturgical worship.

Key Responsibilities

Music Direction & Supervision

  • Direct and supervise the direction of all performing musical ensembles of the parish, including the supervision of Choir Directors, assistant organists, and the work of music ministry staff.
  • Direct congregational singing at all regularly scheduled worship services.
  • Play the organ for weddings, funerals, and other mid-week services, or delegate to Assistant Organists where necessary.

Worship Planning & Collaboration

  • Source, arrange, and provide music for all church activities as requested, in consultation with the Worship Minister and Ministry staff.
  • Work with Ministries staff to coordinate all worship needs in the church calendar and programs.

Administration & Resource Management

  • Keep records of the work of Assistant Organists and Musicians and ensure any honoraria are accurately requisitioned.
  • Monitor the purchasing and replacement of all music-related equipment, supplies, and instruments.
  • Schedule and oversee maintenance of the organs, pianos, and other musical instruments as necessary.
  • Oversee the handling and development of the cathedral Music Library.
  • Oversee the use of musical instruments, equipment, and facilities.
  • Prepare an annual music budget for approval and administrate the approved budget.

Organ Sustainability & Development

  • Lead the long-term sustainability and maintenance of the Cathedral Organ by coordinating with organ technicians and supporting the training and development of local organ maintenance personnel.

Recruitment & Development

  • Work with the nominating committee to enlist and train leaders for the music ministry.
  • Lead the identification and recruitment of organists, choristers, and instrumentalists.
  • Oversee the development of young choristers by overseeing the music program in the school and leading All Saints Primary School Choir, as well as leading/overseeing the Sunday School Choir.

Professional Growth

  • Engage in continuous professional development and remain abreast of emerging trends, resources, and best practices in music performance, education, music ministry, and administration.

  • Choral directing expertise.
  • Strategic planning, administration, and budgeting.
  • High emotional intelligence and pastoral sensitivity.
  • Strong team leadership, mentorship, and interpersonal communication.
  • Deep understanding of liturgy and worship planning.

Academic and Professional Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in music or its equivalent.
  • Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Certification.
  • Proficiency in playing the organ.
  • A minimum of five years’ relevant experience in a similar position.
