It is the successor to Kirinyaga Technical Institute which was conceived by the people of Kirinyaga way back in 1971 when the former head of state His Excellency the President, Hon. Daniel Arap Moi C.G.H., M.P. (then Vice-president) launched the Harambee Fund Raising Drive at the request of Kirinyaga people. Kirinyaga County Council set aside 200 acres of land for the institute at Kutus and 50 more acres were also acquired at Kangaita area on the slopes of Mt. Kenya. The Institute opened doors to the first students on 2nd March 1977 when 72 students were enrolled, 48 of these students were admitted in the building and construction department while the remaining 24 were enrolled in the clothing and textile technology department. New training programmes were introduced in plumbing and Electrical installation in the early and mid-eighties respectively. Kirinyaga University College the predecessor to KyU was established as a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and technology (JKUAT) through a Legal Order No. 108 of August 2011. KyUC admitted its first student in September 2012 in two Bachelors’ degree programmes and grew tremendously in student and staff population with commensurate facilities to host 13 degree programmes. Kirinyaga University was granted charter by His Excellency Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta the President of the republic of Kenya on 7th October 2016 with thirteen academic degree programmes, and has since increased the number of academic degree programmes to seventeen (17). The University is positioning itself to be a leader in offering courses geared towards producing employers and not employees in areas outlined by the Vision 2030. Job Description

Role Overview

This role sits within the university’s estates and maintenance team, ensuring the physical fabric of campus buildings remains safe, functional, and presentable. Day to day, you will carry out planned and reactive masonry, tiling, roofing, and paving repairs across academic, administrative, and residential buildings. Your work directly supports uninterrupted university operations by preventing structural deterioration and maintaining a clean, secure environment for staff, students, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect and repair masonry and tiled surfaces across all university buildings, including walls, floors, corridors, and stairwells.
  • Install, maintain, and repair burglar-proofing fixtures such as security grilles, mesh, and bars on windows and doors.
  • Lay and re-lay paving slabs on external walkways and pathways, ensuring level, durable, and safe surfaces for pedestrian traffic.
  • Construct new masonry walls, partitions, and load-bearing structures according to project drawings and supervisor instructions.
  • Apply plastering and rendering to internal and external surfaces, including patching, smoothing, and finishing to a professional standard.
  • Repair leaking roofs by identifying damaged sections, replacing defective tiles or sheets, and reapplying waterproofing materials where needed.
  • Fix and replace floor and wall tiles in restrooms, offices, lecture halls, and other high-traffic areas, ensuring neat alignment and proper adhesion.
  • Perform other maintenance duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor to support campus-wide repair and upkeep priorities.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Possession of a Government Trade Test Certificate Grade III in masonry or tiling from NITA or another recognised institution.
  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or an equivalent academic qualification.
  • At least three years of practical experience in a public sector institution or a university environment.
  • Hands-on familiarity with masonry tools, tiling equipment, and techniques such as cutting, levelling, mixing mortar, and applying finishes.
  • Ability to interpret rough sketches, measurements, and verbal instructions to complete repairs accurately.
  • Physical fitness and willingness to work at heights, in confined spaces, and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • National Youth Service (NYS) training in masonry or a related trade will be considered an added advantage.
