Job Description

Main duties:

  • Aware of and carry out your responsibilities in line with legislation and Departmental policies.
  • Conduct masonry tasks, remodelling work and carry out method statements and risk assessments.
  • Read and interpret blueprints/drawings to determine specifications and calculate materials required.
  • Lay bricks, stone, or similar materials to build or refurbish walls, arches, chimneys, and other structures.
  • Apply and smooth mortar or other mixture over work surface.
  • Operate heavy machinery and manual/ power tools, such as mixers, saws, drills. 
  • Restore, clean, and repair existing masonry structures.
  • Ensure structures are level and compatible with local codes and regulations.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
  • Examine brickwork or structure to determine need for repair and giving the Chain of Command relevant advice.
  • Plan and estimate the amount of materials and labour required for masonry work.
  • Erects scaffolding or sets up ladders to work above ground level.
  • Understands and carries out all requirements under Health and Safety for the task including reading, understanding, and complying with the risk assessments and site safety orders.
  • Understand customers’ and suppliers; needs and explore practical solutions with them. You manage expectations by explaining what is and is not possible.
  • Receive instructions from supervisor. Assist in performing other maintenance duties as assigned.
  • Advise senior colleagues on alternative techniques or practices that would give better value for money.
  • Provide work direction and guidance to labourers assisting them.
  • Interpret blueprints and drawings to determine specifications and to calculate the materials required.
  • Maintains all equipment in a clean, safe, and serviceable condition.
  • Inspects, maintains, and correctly wears items of PPE specific to the task. Keeps work site/workshop tidy at all times especially at the end of each shift or working day.
  • Responsibility for the use of materials and tools issued for the task including the safe storage and security, protection from the elements and being accountable for un-used materials.

Secondary duties:

  • Work is performed indoors and outside.  Outside work requires exposure to varying weather and terrain conditions, hazardous traffic conditions, noise, fumes, odours, and gases; exposure to moving equipment and occasional exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, wet/humid conditions, high, open or confined spaces, intermittent vibration and noise.  Work requires frequent standing and walking and occasional bending, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, crawling, reaching, grasping and lifting and/or moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds.  Employees may be required (after sufficient training and experience) be required to carry out the duties of Confined Spaces, Working at Height, Legionella and Asbestos competent person duties.
  • Employees are subject to call-back during emergencies on a 24-hour basis and are required to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays during special events.
  • Carry out any other duties commensurate with the trade/grade as directed by the MLM.
  • In accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992, you have a duty to take reasonable care of your own health and safety and that of others that may be affected by your acts or omissions.  You are to cooperate with the Garrison Engineer’s Department so far as is necessary to enable the Garrison Engineer to comply with his duties under the Act.  It is a disciplinary offence if you intentionally, or recklessly, interfere with or misuse anything provided in the interests of health, safety or welfare.  You should inform Chain of Command of any dangerous situations or shortcomings in the current health and safety arrangements.  BATUK’s Health and Safety Policy is laid down in Standing Orders, which you will be required to sign to say that you have read and understand the contents of the policy.

Competences/qualifications/experience:

Essential

  • Minimum of Trade Test 1 in Masonry or brick laying course, with three years working experience.
  • Kenya certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE)
  • Perform maintenance and repair work on masonry projects and refurbishments, in residential buildings, workshops, stores, or outdoors.
  • Be aware of occupational hazards and utilize standard safety practices.
  • Perform a variety of heavy manual labour tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavourable environmental conditions.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
  • Work independently and with others and perform duties with minimum supervision.
  • Operate a variety of motorised and hand tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all personnel.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Able to work with changing priorities and uncertainty.

Desirable

  • Hold valid Kenya driving Licence (Class B, C1 & C).
  • Methods and techniques of maintenance, inspection and emergency repair programs.
  • Motorised and hand tools and equipment used in assigned work area.
  • Understand occupational hazards and standard safety practices and procedures.
  • Heavy equipment operation techniques.
  • Understand policies, functions and responsibilities, operations, and objectives of the Organisation.
  • Understand the principles and practices of supervision and employee development.

Training Requirements:

  • Structure and Function of the British Army, Defence Estates and BATUK.
  • Equipment Care including Use and Maintenance.
  • Health and Safety at Work.
  • COSHH awareness.
  • Manual Handling.
  • First Aid & Fire.
