Role Overview
This is a senior leadership position with a leading Kenyan commercial bank, tasked with steering the growth and strategic direction of its investment banking and brokerage arm. Day to day, the Managing Director will drive deal origination, oversee transaction execution across mergers, acquisitions, and capital raising, and ensure the brokerage business remains a top performer in market share and profitability. Key Responsibilities
- Proactively identify, source, and introduce prospective clients for merger, acquisition, and capital-raising mandates through sustained business development efforts.
- Leverage an extensive network to locate potential buyers and investors for client businesses, actively engaging these parties on behalf of clients to facilitate successful transactions.
- Advise private equity and corporate clients on strategic transactions, including growth capital, recapitalizations, restructurings, leveraged buyouts, and acquisition financing structures.
- Build and manage a dedicated private debt and equity placement platform, from product development through to investor relationships and deal execution.
- Oversee the bank's brokerage business, maintaining its leadership position in market share, trading volumes, and profitability while pursuing continuous expansion.
- Lead, supervise, and mentor the investment banking team, focusing on transaction structuring, execution quality, lead generation, pitch preparation, and client presentation skills.
- Collaborate with other divisions of the bank to identify cross-selling opportunities and support revenue generation across the broader group.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Mathematics, Statistics, Accounting, or a related discipline from a recognized institution.
- A postgraduate qualification such as an MBA or a Master's degree in Finance or Economics will be highly regarded; professional certifications such as CFA, CPA/ACCA, or equivalent capital markets credentials are advantageous.
- At least 12 years of professional experience in investment banking, fund management, or strategy consulting, with deep exposure to deal advisory.
- Minimum of 5 years in a senior leadership role carrying significant commercial or P&L responsibility.
- Demonstrated track record of originating, structuring, negotiating, and closing major transactions—particularly equity or debt investments, M&A, private equity involvement, and joint ventures.
- Strong existing network or demonstrated ability to build relationships with potential clients, investors, and referral sources in the region.
- Exceptional analytical, quantitative, and research skills, with solid expertise in M&A advisory, capital raising, and complex financing structures.
- Entrepreneurial mindset, self-starting drive, commercial acumen, and proven leadership and mentoring capabilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, coupled with the highest standards of professional conduct and business ethics.
