It is the successor to Kirinyaga Technical Institute which was conceived by the people of Kirinyaga way back in 1971 when the former head of state His Excellency the President, Hon. Daniel Arap Moi C.G.H., M.P. (then Vice-president) launched the Harambee Fund Raising Drive at the request of Kirinyaga people. Kirinyaga County Council set aside 200 acres of land for the institute at Kutus and 50 more acres were also acquired at Kangaita area on the slopes of Mt. Kenya. The Institute opened doors to the first students on 2nd March 1977 when 72 students were enrolled, 48 of these students were admitted in the building and construction department while the remaining 24 were enrolled in the clothing and textile technology department. New training programmes were introduced in plumbing and Electrical installation in the early and mid-eighties respectively. Kirinyaga University College the predecessor to KyU was established as a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and technology (JKUAT) through a Legal Order No. 108 of August 2011. KyUC admitted its first student in September 2012 in two Bachelors’ degree programmes and grew tremendously in student and staff population with commensurate facilities to host 13 degree programmes. Kirinyaga University was granted charter by His Excellency Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta the President of the republic of Kenya on 7th October 2016 with thirteen academic degree programmes, and has since increased the number of academic degree programmes to seventeen (17). The University is positioning itself to be a leader in offering courses geared towards producing employers and not employees in areas outlined by the Vision 2030. Job Description

Role Overview

This position focuses on the practical upkeep and technical management of physical facilities within a university or similarly structured institutional environment. The role combines daily maintenance supervision with drafting, cost estimation, and contractor coordination, ensuring that buildings and grounds remain safe, functional, and well presented. By maintaining accurate technical records and overseeing works to a high standard, this role directly protects the institution’s assets and supports a productive campus environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily maintenance of buildings, grounds, and housekeeping operations to keep all facilities clean, secure, and in good working order.
  • Prepare architectural and structural drawings for repair, renovation, and new construction projects as required.
  • Develop cost estimates for maintenance works and planned building projects to support budgeting and decision-making.
  • Conduct site measurements and surveys to support project valuation, scoping, and implementation.
  • Coordinate and assign work to artisans and tradespeople, monitoring their progress to ensure timely completion.
  • Manage material usage on projects, implementing measures to prevent waste, theft, or unnecessary loss.
  • Carry out routine surveillance of physical facilities to identify defects, hazards, or areas requiring attention.
  • Contribute to the preparation and execution of a planned maintenance schedule for all institutional buildings and infrastructure.
  • Supervise contractors and consultants to ensure their workmanship and deliverables meet expected quality standards.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the immediate supervisor in support of facility operations.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or Architecture from a recognized institution.
  • A Diploma or Higher Diploma in Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, or Architecture will be considered an added advantage.
  • At least six years of cumulative relevant work experience, including a minimum of three years at the level of Maintenance Officer II or an equivalent role within a university or comparable organization.
  • Registration with the relevant professional body, such as an engineers, architects, or quantity surveyors board.
  • Strong practical knowledge of building maintenance, construction methods, and materials.
  • Proficiency in preparing technical drawings, cost estimates, and site measurement reports.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills to coordinate artisans, contractors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and maintain accurate records of facility inspections and maintenance activities.
