Role Overview
This role supports timely loan repayment by monitoring overdue accounts and coordinating appropriate recovery actions. Through accurate account administration, clear communication with members and employers, and careful attention to credit risk, the Credit Officer helps protect the loan portfolio and limit losses while ensuring recovery is handled fairly and in line with policy.
Key Responsibilities
- Contact members with overdue loans by phone, email and text, and track follow-up through to resolution.
- Administer direct-debit arrangements, including capturing details from loan documents, submitting instructions to banks, reconciling deductions each month and reporting on exceptions.
- Coordinate employer check-off repayments by issuing payment advice and clearance letters to members and employers, then following up on outstanding items.
- Issue default notices in accordance with the organisation’s recovery policies and procedures.
- Respond to member questions about loan accounts and repayment status, and process guarantor refunds when a borrower has made the relevant payments.
- Review invoices from debt collectors and other recovery providers for processing.
- Prepare regular reports on delinquent accounts and loan arrears, highlighting follow-up progress and emerging portfolio risks.
- Support loan assessment by checking member details, supporting documents and bank statements; apply deposit-tier requirements and process guarantor substitutions under policy.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Credit Administration, Co-operative Management or a related discipline.
- At least two years of relevant experience in credit management, preferably in a comparable role.
- CPA finalist status or Certified Credit Professional (CCP) qualification.
- Meet the applicable integrity and suitability requirements under Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
- Strong negotiation, persuasion and business communication skills, with the ability to handle repayment discussions professionally.
- Working knowledge of credit monitoring, loan portfolio management and risk assessment.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel and word-processing skills, alongside strong analytical, problem-solving and records-management ability.
- Demonstrate integrity, emotional intelligence and effective interpersonal skills.
