Job Description

Role Overview

This position sits within a university’s legal affairs unit, providing day-to-day legal counsel and operational support across the institution. You will handle a mix of litigation coordination, contract drafting, and compliance work, acting as the bridge between internal departments and external advocates. The role matters because it protects the university’s legal interests in employment disputes, regulatory matters, and contractual relationships, ensuring every decision follows established statutes and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Draft, review, and finalise legal documents including contracts, agreements, and official correspondence, routing them through the proper approval channels.
  • Manage the university’s litigation portfolio by preparing case files, gathering evidence, and coordinating closely with external lawyers on active matters.
  • Represent the university in court proceedings and follow up on case progress, keeping senior leadership informed of developments and potential risks.
  • Advise on legal implications across university operations, including staff discipline, employment matters, and internal investigations.
  • Prepare clear memoranda and reports on legal issues for internal stakeholders, translating complex legal concepts into actionable guidance.
  • Assist in the interpretation and periodic review of university statutes, suggesting amendments to keep policies legally sound.
  • Ensure institutional compliance with laid-down regulations in all areas with legal exposure, flagging potential breaches before they escalate.
  • Support ad hoc legal needs as they arise, contributing to projects and committees requiring legal input.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Law from a recognised university.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Studies from the Kenya School of Law.
  • Admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid practising certificate.
  • A minimum of three years of post-qualification legal practice, ideally within a corporate, institutional, or litigation setting.
  • Strong drafting and analytical skills, with the ability to produce precise legal documents under tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in standard computer applications and legal research tools.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, with the confidence to advise senior management and external counsel alike.
