Landfill Attendant

  • Salary & Benefits: KSh 83,000 monthly (Travel & Accommodation Fully Covered)

Purpose of the Role

The Landfill Attendant will direct day-to-day operations at the landfill site, ensuring that municipal and industrial waste reception, compaction, and placement align strictly with local environmental laws and occupational safety standards. The role involves managing on-site traffic, supervising site workers and heavy machinery operators, and maintaining infrastructure integrity.

Key Responsibilities

Site Operations & Waste Management

  • Supervise daily waste reception, inspection, sorting, placement, and compaction activities across active landfill cells.

  • Direct incoming collection vehicles and site traffic to ensure safe, orderly, and efficient offloading.

  • Enforce waste acceptance criteria to prevent toxic, hazardous, or unapproved materials from entering the site.

  • Oversee site infrastructure maintenance including perimeter fencing, signage, access roads, and drainage pathways.

Environmental Compliance & Safety

  • Monitor environmental systems including leachate containment, surface drainage, and landfill gas controls.

  • Enforce mandatory site safety rules, hazard controls, and proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage among all personnel.

  • Conduct routine hazard inspections and immediately escalate environmental breaches or site safety incidents.

Team Supervision & Maintenance Coordination

  • Lead and assign daily duties to landfill workers, site contractors, and heavy equipment operators.

  • Maintain daily operational logs, waste volume ledgers, and site incident reports.

  • Inspect landfill machinery, track routine service schedules, and coordinate prompt repairs with maintenance technicians.

Candidate Profile

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education: Certificate or Diploma in Environmental Management, Waste Management, Civil Engineering, or a related technical discipline (preferred).

  • Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of direct experience in landfill operations, waste management facilities, or large-scale civil works.

  • Supervisory Experience: Proven capability in managing operational teams, field contractors, and heavy equipment operators.

  • Vocational Skills: Formal vocational training in heavy machinery operation or site safety management is an added advantage.

Essential Competencies

  • Sound knowledge of environmental compliance guidelines, waste handling protocols, and occupational health regulations.

  • Strong leadership, conflict resolution, and site organization skills.

  • Ability to maintain accurate operational logs and communicate effectively across multicultural teams.
