ISP Field Technician
Direct Line Reporting: Field Operations Supervisor
Industry Sector: ISP / Telecommunications
Gross Salary Structure: Kshs. 30,000 – 35,000
Location: Ngong Road
Position Context
We are seeking a highly disciplined, safety-conscious ISP Field Technician to drive our suburban fiber rollout and client-side connectivity networks. Your primary focus will be to execute flawless end-to-end Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Fiber-to-the-Business (FTTB) connections, guiding structural drops from overhead distribution points straight into user terminals. This position bridges rigorous field engineering with hands-on customer systems calibration; you will mount telecommunications poles, complete core fusion splices, and map local Wi-Fi routing configurations. The role demands an active, technically sound field specialist who can independently diagnose complex signal drops using advanced optical testing gear while upholding strict physical safety parameters.
Operational Functions
Fiber Deployment & Terminal Onboarding
- Route, secure, and terminate high-durability fiber optic lines and Cat6 structural cables in strict alignment with regional deployment standards.
- Mount and calibrate customer premises equipment (CPE), multi-band routers, switches, and auxiliary media converters.
- Configure localized IP parameters, access points, and gateway architectures to verify broadband functionality before signing off on client installations.
- Solder and secure localized fiber distribution boxes, drop sleeves, and internal wall plates cleanly inside consumer spaces.
Advanced Maintenance & Link Debugging
- Isolate, diagnose, and resolve customer connectivity complaints, structural fiber breaks, and hardware failure points.
- Conduct precise Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) tests, power meter sweeps, and visual fault location checks to isolate micro-bends or line drops.
- Execute fast emergency repairs during unexpected fiber cuts or localized distribution loop outages to preserve system up-time.
- Replace weathered drop cables, faulty connectors, and damaged networking hardware systematically during preventive site audits.
Fusion Splicing & Quality Auditing
- Perform high-precision optical fiber core alignments and splicing configurations utilizing modern automatic fusion splicing machinery.
- Track individual splice attenuation losses meticulously, ensuring every connection point satisfies strict decibel threshold guidelines.
- Keep clean, structured logs of splice trays, port allocations, optical splitters, and patch frame maps across active hubs.
Field Safety, Compliance & Records Logging
- Scale electrical and telecommunications poles confidently utilizing approved industrial harnesses, hooks, and climbing arrays.
- Maintain a permanent personal protective equipment (PPE) profile, strictly complying with working-at-heights and electrical proximity parameters.
- Update corporate ticket frameworks, logging exact fiber material lengths used, inventory reserves, and finalized link readings.
- Escalate complex physical routing barriers or backhaul infrastructure damages immediately to the Network Operations Centre (NOC).
