Job Description

Role Overview

As a Surgical Specialist, you will take a lead role in delivering comprehensive surgical care to patients, from initial outpatient evaluation through operative treatment and postoperative follow-up. Your day-to-day work will involve performing both elective and emergency procedures, directing clinical teams, and driving decisions that directly impact patient safety and recovery. Your expertise will also strengthen the department's teaching and quality-assurance functions, ensuring the surgical unit operates with both clinical excellence and accountability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, diagnose, and manage surgical patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings, developing individualised care plans that reflect best practice.
  • Perform a broad range of surgical procedures, including complex and emergency operations, while maintaining the highest standards of operative safety.
  • Lead ward rounds and multidisciplinary team meetings to coordinate patient care, reviewing progress and adjusting treatment strategies as needed.
  • Provide clinical supervision and on-the-job training to junior medical officers, interns, and medical students, fostering a learning culture within the department.
  • Participate actively in clinical audit, morbidity and mortality reviews, and protocol development to continually improve surgical outcomes.
  • Collaborate with anaesthetists, nursing staff, and allied health professionals to ensure seamless patient care before, during, and after surgery.
  • Maintain complete and timely medical records, including operation notes, discharge summaries, and referral letters, in line with professional and legal requirements.
  • Take part in the on-call rota for emergency surgical cases, responding promptly and effectively to urgent clinical presentations.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Medicine (MBChB, MBBS, or equivalent medical degree) from a recognised institution.
  • Master's degree in a surgical specialty, or equivalent postgraduate specialty training, demonstrating advanced clinical competence in surgery.
  • Full registration with the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council as a Specialist Surgeon, with a valid practising licence.
  • Proven ability to function effectively both as a collaborative team member and as a clinical team leader, directing others under pressure.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, particularly in acute and complex surgical situations where rapid judgement is critical.
  • Results-oriented mindset with a track record of achieving positive patient outcomes and meeting departmental performance targets.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging with patients, families, and multidisciplinary colleagues.
