General Paediatrician

Role Overview

You will act as a specialist medical provider for a broad paediatric population, seeing patients in outpatient consultations, ward rounds, and emergency situations. Your day-to-day work centres on accurate diagnosis, evidence-based treatment planning, and clear communication with families, while also contributing to hospital-wide safety and quality initiatives. This role matters because you will be the medical anchor for children at every stage of development, helping to reduce preventable illness and ensuring that complex cases are identified and escalated early.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform thorough histories and physical examinations for newborns, infants, children, and adolescents, then formulate differential diagnoses and management plans.
• Manage both acute presentations—such as respiratory infections, gastroenteritis, and febrile illness—and chronic conditions including asthma, epilepsy, and growth or nutritional disorders.
• Lead initial stabilisation of paediatric emergencies, including respiratory distress, seizures, and dehydration, and arrange timely admission or transfer when specialist intervention is required.
• Track each patient’s growth parameters, developmental milestones, and immunisation status, offering anticipatory guidance to parents and caregivers.
• Recognise red flags for developmental delay, behavioural difficulties, safeguarding concerns, and malnutrition, and initiate structured assessment or referral pathways.
• Order and interpret laboratory, radiological, and other diagnostic tests, then translate results into practical, family-friendly treatment plans with scheduled follow-up.
• Document clinical encounters accurately, share information with multidisciplinary colleagues, and coordinate cross-specialty referrals to ensure smooth care transitions.
• Take part in regular clinical audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and patient-safety initiatives, using findings to improve local protocols and prescribing practices.
• Mentor junior doctors and medical students during ward rounds and teaching sessions, and stay current through ongoing professional development activities.

Requirements & Qualifications

• MBChB or an equivalent recognised medical degree, followed by an MMed in Paediatrics or an equivalent postgraduate specialty qualification.
• Full registration and a valid specialist practising licence with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) in General Paediatrics.
• At least 3 to 5 years of hands-on experience in general paediatric practice, ideally within a hospital or multidisciplinary clinical environment.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or an equivalent is an added advantage.
• Demonstrated ability to assess acutely unwell children, prioritise under pressure, and manage emergencies with confidence and composure.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with a patient, empathetic approach that puts children and their caregivers at ease.
• Strong teamwork orientation, respect for confidentiality, and consistent adherence to ethical standards, infection control, and hospital policies.
