Role Overview
Based in Nairobi, this Cell 6 medical support role helps mission teams turn medical priorities into reliable practice across their projects. You will provide strategic and technical guidance on areas such as pharmacy, nursing, infection prevention, hospital management and medical data, while tracking whether agreed plans are being implemented and delivering the intended results.
Working across field missions and the cell, you will connect operational needs with medical standards, help teams prepare for emergencies, and use programme data and operational research to inform decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Guide mission teams on delegated medical dossiers, including pharmacy management, international medical orders, nursing care, infection prevention and control, patient safety, staff health, hospital management and health information systems.
- Review project implementation and support the application of Cell 6 medical strategies in line with MSF OCP’s medical and operational priorities, taking local context into account.
- Help missions plan annual medical supplies, budgets and related staffing needs; review supply requirements with finance and supply colleagues and validate medical orders and local purchases according to organisational procedures.
- Monitor medical procurement and stock management, and check that emergency reserves and staffing arrangements reflect each mission’s preparedness plan.
- Follow the quality and timeliness of medical and pharmacy reporting, assess medical indicators and objectives, and contribute analysis to quarterly and annual portfolio reviews.
- Support mission teams to apply staff health, medical evacuation and referral policies, and follow up on agreed actions with field colleagues.
- Work with the Epicentre focal point to identify operational research opportunities and shape relevant epidemiological questions.
- Provide functional guidance to Medical Coordinators, contribute to technical briefings and training, visit projects periodically and cover for Medical Coordinators when delegated.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Professional qualification as a medical doctor, clinical officer or nurse.
- At least two years of field experience with a medical NGO at Medical Coordinator level.
- Knowledge of pharmacy tools, international medical order procedures and medical data platforms such as HMIS or DHIS2.
- Strong project management and organisational skills, including familiarity with team management methods and MSF management and monitoring tools.
- Ability to develop medical and operational approaches suited to different contexts, with sound analytical and summarising skills.
- Adaptability, responsiveness and availability suited to humanitarian operations, alongside strong teamwork and negotiation skills.
- Experience in emergency response and previous MSF experience are assets.
