Role Overview
This is a field-based conservation and enforcement post for someone who is equally comfortable walking a long patrol line and writing a clean incident report. The officer operates at the frontline of wildlife protection, moving between anti-poaching operations, habitat and species monitoring, community liaison, and the investigation of offences under Kenya's wildlife and environmental legislation. The work matters because it sits directly between threatened ecosystems and the pressures that degrade them — every patrol, seizure, or prosecution file either strengthens or weakens the protection the organisation can realistically deliver on the ground, and the people who hold this position are the ones turning policy commitments into observable outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct routine and intelligence-led patrols across assigned conservation areas, covering both day and night shifts, to deter poaching, illegal logging, charcoal burning, grazing encroachment, and unauthorised entry.
- Detect, disarm, and disrupt illegal activity in the field, including locating and removing snares, traps, and other illegal gear, and securing evidence in line with chain-of-custody requirements.
- Apprehend suspects, prepare investigation files, and support the prosecution of wildlife and environmental offences through statements, exhibits, and court attendance as a witness.
- Monitor wildlife populations, migration patterns, mortalities, and habitat condition, recording observations accurately in field data systems and reporting unusual trends promptly.
- Respond to human–wildlife conflict incidents, including problem animal control, injury or livestock-loss cases, and emergency callouts within the assigned station's area of operation.
- Engage surrounding communities, schools, and local leaders on conservation awareness, benefit-sharing arrangements, and reporting channels that encourage intelligence to flow in.
- Coordinate with other security agencies, county authorities, and partner organisations during joint operations, roadblocks, and cross-boundary exercises.
- Maintain assigned firearms, vehicles, communication equipment, and camp infrastructure in serviceable condition, and complete daily situation reports and duty returns.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree from a recognised university or institution in any of the following: Wildlife Management, Environmental Management, Forestry, Tourism Management, Environmental Science, Botany and Zoology, Ecology, Animal Health, Criminology, Law, Risk and Disaster Management, or Human Resource Management.
- Completion of a Paramilitary Training Course lasting not less than six (6) months.
- Physically and medically fit for sustained field, patrol, and operational duties.
- No criminal record.
- Proficiency in computer applications, including routine word processing, spreadsheets, and field data entry.
- Must meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, on leadership and integrity.
