Role Overview
This role places you at the financial command center of Venture Kenya, where you’ll oversee the full lifecycle of money moving through the organization — from the moment funds land in the bank to the final approved payment. You’ll lead a compact finance team handling receipts, disbursements, and record-keeping, while personally guaranteeing that every transaction is documented, traceable, and reconciled in real time. Your steady hand on the books ensures leadership always knows exactly where a transaction stands, and that the organization stays audit-ready and compliant for its carbon credit certification requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Record and safeguard all incoming funds on the same day they are received, ensuring nothing is left unlogged or exposed.
- Review every payment request against approved budgets, verifying invoices and supporting documents are in order before authorizing disbursement.
- Oversee the income and receipts, disbursements and payments, and records/assets/financial reporting functions to keep all transactions accurate and fully traceable.
- Maintain complete, audit-ready financial files with no missing invoices, unreconciled entries, or lingering gaps in documentation.
- Compile and submit monthly financial reports to the Country Director and Holding Finance, clearly flagging any irregularities or pending items.
- Proactively chase down missing paperwork and resolve discrepancies before month-end closing, preventing small issues from becoming audit findings.
- Escalate any payment requests above approved thresholds or any signs of financial irregularity promptly, through the proper channels, and with a clear rationale.
- Answer financial queries from division heads, auditors, and Holding Finance with accurate, up-to-date information, and follow through until each issue is closed.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A degree or professional qualification in Finance, Accounting, or a related field.
- Solid hands-on experience in financial management, budgeting, or accounting — ideally within an operational, field-based, or social-impact organization in Kenya or the wider East Africa region.
- A meticulous eye for detail, with proven comfort working across budgets, reconciliations, and periodic financial reporting.
- Strong judgment to decide when a payment should be approved, held, or escalated — and the confidence to defend that decision to both colleagues and senior stakeholders.
- Clear, practical communication skills, able to translate financial status and requirements for non-finance team leads and field staff just as easily as for Holding Finance.
- Unquestionable integrity and discretion, given the sensitivity of financial data and the strict audit trail required for carbon credit certification.
- Working knowledge of Kenyan financial regulations, tax requirements, and banking practices.
- Ability to operate within a structured reporting line while still exercising sound, independent judgment on day-to-day financial matters.
- An added advantage: familiarity with compliance-driven financial reporting — for example, carbon credit programs, grant compliance, or other certification-related audit processes.
