Role Overview
The Heavy Commercial Vehicle Driver is the operational link that keeps consignments moving between company sites, customers, and collection points. Each day involves operating assigned vehicles on planned and responsive routes, handling goods safely, and keeping Dispatch and the Control Room informed so delivery commitments are met. Because the role represents the employer on public roads and at customer premises, it calls for disciplined driving, accurate documentation, and a consistently professional approach.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate assigned heavy commercial vehicles in a safe, lawful, and fuel-conscious manner while completing delivery and collection schedules within agreed timeframes.
- Load, secure, and offload consignments using correct manual handling and HSE-approved techniques, checking that goods remain undamaged during movement.
- Stay in regular contact with Dispatch and Control Room colleagues, confirming route progress, delays, completed drops, and collection issues that affect the day’s plan.
- Carry out pre-trip and post-trip vehicle checks, keep the cab, body, and load space clean and presentable, and report faults, damage, or servicing needs promptly.
- Complete handover/takeover, journey, work-ticket, and courier paperwork accurately, following company procedures, Driver Golden Rules, and all traffic laws.
- Maintain vehicle branding, licensing, and statutory compliance, observe authorised reporting times, and carry only approved passengers.
- Keep customer records and shipment details confidential as required by the Data Protection Policy, sharing them only when there is a legitimate work reason.
- Represent the company with honesty, courtesy, and strong customer service, handling routine delivery queries professionally and escalating issues when needed.
Requirements & Qualifications
- KCSE secondary school certificate or equivalent.
- Valid driving licence appropriate for heavy commercial vehicles.
- At least five years of hands-on experience driving heavy commercial vehicles, ideally in delivery, logistics, or distribution work.
- Demonstrated integrity, honesty, and professionalism, with the judgement to handle customer and shipment information responsibly.
- Good grooming, clear communication, and effective time management.
- A safe and courteous driving record, with awareness of road safety and defensive driving practices.
- Customer-focused and cost-conscious approach to routes, fuel use, and vehicle care.
- Able to remain effective during demanding schedules and to work independently without close supervision.
- A dependable team member who takes ownership of assigned routes and tasks.
