Job Description

Role Overview

This role centres on delivering safe, compassionate haemodialysis care to patients with kidney failure, working within a hospital dialysis unit alongside nephrologists and other nursing staff. Day to day, you will manage the full dialysis cycle — preparing patients, operating and troubleshooting machines, observing treatment responses, and stepping in quickly when complications arise. Your attentiveness and clinical discipline directly influence patient safety, treatment outcomes, and the overall quality of the unit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver haemodialysis sessions from start to finish, ensuring each treatment is performed safely and in line with the patient's individual care plan.
  • Prepare dialysis machines, circuit lines, and dialysers, then operate and monitor the equipment throughout treatment, adjusting parameters as needed.
  • Conduct pre-dialysis assessments — checking vital signs, weight, vascular access, and overall condition — and continue monitoring during and after treatment with accurate documentation.
  • Recognise early warning signs of complications such as hypotension, cramping, clotting, or access-site issues, and respond promptly with appropriate interventions.
  • Enforce strict infection prevention and control protocols, including hand hygiene, aseptic technique, linen handling, and waste disposal, to protect vulnerable patients.
  • Administer prescribed medications, including intravenous therapies, with correct dosage, timing, and documentation.
  • Educate patients and family members on dialysis routines, vascular access care, dietary restrictions, fluid intake, medication adherence, and necessary lifestyle adjustments.
  • Carry out routine checks on dialysis equipment, report malfunctions, and keep supplies organised and stocked to ensure uninterrupted treatment schedules.
  • Communicate closely with nephrologists and the wider multidisciplinary team to share patient observations, adjust care plans, and ensure continuity of care.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from a recognised institution.
  • Registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) and possession of a valid, current practising licence.
  • Specialised training or certification in Haemodialysis Nursing, demonstrating competency in renal replacement therapy.
  • At least 2 years of practical experience working in a dialysis unit is strongly preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is an added advantage.
  • Strong professionalism, ethical conduct, personal integrity, and the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Genuine commitment to the welfare of patients with chronic kidney disease, including empathy and clear communication skills.
