Job Description

Role Overview

This position places you at the forefront of eye care delivery, where you will diagnose, treat, and surgically manage a broad spectrum of ophthalmic conditions. Your daily work will balance outpatient consultations, surgical lists, and follow-up care, directly influencing patients' long-term visual outcomes and quality of life. Beyond individual patient interactions, you will contribute to the broader mission of reducing preventable blindness through community engagement and collaboration with fellow healthcare providers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform thorough eye assessments, including visual acuity testing, slit-lamp examinations, and intraocular pressure measurements, to identify conditions such as glaucoma, retinal disorders, and refractive errors.
  • Execute manual cataract surgeries and other ophthalmic procedures with precision, adapting techniques to each patient’s specific anatomical and clinical needs.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans for acute and chronic eye conditions, ranging from infections and trauma to degenerative diseases.
  • Provide comprehensive perioperative care, including patient counselling before surgery, intraoperative management, and post-operative monitoring to minimise complications and optimise recovery.
  • Document clinical findings, surgical notes, and treatment outcomes meticulously, ensuring compliance with medical record standards and facilitating continuity of care.
  • Lead or participate in outreach initiatives aimed at screening underserved populations, raising awareness about eye health, and referring cases that require advanced intervention.
  • Consult and coordinate with general practitioners, nurses, and other specialists to address systemic health issues that impact ocular health, such as diabetes or hypertension.
  • Stay informed on emerging surgical techniques, diagnostic tools, and evidence-based protocols to continually enhance service delivery.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Possession of a Master of Medicine degree in Ophthalmology (MMED or equivalent) from a recognised institution.
  • Full registration and a valid practising licence with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC).
  • At least two years of hands-on clinical experience as an ophthalmologist, with substantial exposure to both outpatient and surgical settings.
  • A documented record of performing a minimum of 200 manual cataract surgeries independently, with successful outcomes and low complication rates.
  • Demonstrated competence in additional ophthalmic procedures, including but not limited to pterygium excision, lid surgery, or glaucoma management.
  • Strong surgical dexterity, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to make sound judgments under pressure.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, enabling clear communication with patients from diverse backgrounds and respectful collaboration with clinical teams.
  • Unquestionable professional integrity, ethical conduct, and a commitment to patient safety and confidentiality.
  • Fresh knowledge of current trends, surgical innovations, and best practices in ophthalmology, including relevant continuing medical education.
