Consultant Gastroenterologist

Role Overview

This position anchors a busy gastroenterology and endoscopy unit, where you will take ownership of both outpatient consultation and procedural care for patients with complex digestive conditions. Beyond diagnosis and treatment, you will shape clinical standards by mentoring junior medical staff, driving quality improvement, and ensuring every patient interaction upholds both ethical rigor and data confidentiality. Your work directly impacts patient outcomes across chronic and acute gastrointestinal cases, from first assessment through long-term management.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out detailed clinical evaluations, taking thorough histories and reviewing prior records to determine the most appropriate investigative pathway for each patient.
• Diagnose and treat a wide spectrum of gastrointestinal disorders, including inflammatory bowel disease, functional bowel disorders, and hepatobiliary conditions, tailoring care to each patient’s presentation.
• Order and interpret laboratory panels, imaging studies, and other diagnostic tools, using results to guide evidence-based treatment decisions.
• Perform and report on endoscopic procedures such as colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, and ERCP, ensuring both diagnostic accuracy and patient comfort throughout.
• Develop and implement comprehensive management plans, balancing pharmacotherapy, nutritional counseling, and timely referrals to surgical colleagues when intervention is needed.
• Provide ongoing follow-up for patients with chronic conditions, adjusting therapy as disease activity changes and supporting them through long-term treatment journeys.
• Collaborate with dietitians, radiologists, surgeons, nursing teams, and endoscopy staff to coordinate multidisciplinary care and optimize outcomes.
• Lead or contribute to clinical audits, research projects, and educational activities that advance the department’s practice and support the professional growth of junior colleagues.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Medical degree (MBChB or equivalent) from a recognized institution, followed by a Master’s degree in Internal Medicine.
• Completed Fellowship in Gastroenterology from an accredited center or institution.
• Full registration and a valid practicing license with the Kenya Medical and Dental Council, along with specialist recognition as a gastroenterologist from KMPDC.
• At least two years of post-fellowship experience in a high-volume gastroenterology and endoscopy setting, with proven competency in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic techniques.
• Demonstrated ability to train and mentor medical officers, nursing staff, and endoscopy personnel, fostering a culture of continuous learning and clinical excellence.
• Sound understanding of patient data protection principles and the ability to maintain meticulous, confidential medical records in compliance with hospital policies and national regulations.
