Consultant Gastroenterologist

Role Overview

You will join a busy gastroenterology and endoscopy unit in Kenya, managing a varied caseload of acute and chronic digestive disorders while performing high-volume diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures. Beyond direct patient care, this role contributes to the department’s clinical excellence through mentoring junior staff, participating in quality improvement, and maintaining rigorous ethical and data-protection standards in line with local regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out thorough outpatient and inpatient consultations, taking structured histories, reviewing prior records, and deciding which investigations are clinically indicated.
• Diagnose and treat conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, peptic ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, and hepatobiliary disorders using current evidence-based protocols.
• Request and interpret laboratory panels, stool studies, imaging, and endoscopic findings to confirm diagnoses and adjust therapy plans accordingly.
• Perform colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, upper endoscopy, and ERCP with attention to patient safety and procedural precision, including therapeutic interventions such as polypectomy and haemostasis.
• Design individualised care plans that combine pharmacological management, nutritional support, lifestyle counselling, and timely referrals to colorectal or hepatobiliary surgeons when needed.
• Coordinate long-term follow-up for patients with chronic gastrointestinal conditions, ensuring continuity, monitoring of disease activity, and early detection of complications.
• Collaborate with dietitians, radiologists, surgeons, and nursing staff to streamline patient pathways and improve multidisciplinary outcomes.
• Supervise and mentor medical officers, endoscopy nurses, and trainees, while actively engaging in clinical research, conferences, and departmental quality initiatives.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Medical degree (MBChB or equivalent), an MMed in Internal Medicine, and a recognised fellowship in Gastroenterology from an accredited institution.
• Specialist recognition and a valid practising license with the Kenya Medical and Dental Council (KMPDC).
• At least two years of post-fellowship experience within a high-volume gastroenterology and endoscopy environment.
• Demonstrated competence in a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures, including ERCP.
• Strong clinical reasoning, documentation, and communication skills, with experience in training or mentoring clinical staff viewed favourably.
• Commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, and compliance with hospital policies, KMPDC regulations, and Kenyan data protection laws.
