Consultant Gastroenterologist

Role Overview

This post is for a fellowship-trained gastroenterologist who will manage a full spectrum of digestive health conditions within a busy hospital endoscopy unit. The day-to-day work balances outpatient consultations, diagnostic and interventional endoscopic procedures, and ongoing care for patients with chronic GI diseases. Your contribution directly strengthens the hospital’s specialist service capacity and helps shape the next generation of endoscopic and clinical staff.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out thorough patient assessments in clinic, reviewing presenting symptoms, past medical history, and existing investigations to decide the next diagnostic steps.
• Diagnose and oversee treatment for gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and other upper and lower digestive tract conditions.
• Order and interpret laboratory studies, imaging, and other investigative work to support accurate clinical judgments.
• Perform endoscopic procedures including colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, upper GI endoscopy, and ERCP, both for diagnosis and for therapeutic intervention.
• Build individualised management plans that combine pharmacological therapy, nutritional guidance, and timely referral to surgical colleagues when needed.
• Provide sustained follow-up for patients living with chronic gastrointestinal illness, adjusting treatment as their condition evolves.
• Collaborate closely with dietitians, radiologists, surgeons, and nursing teams to deliver coordinated, multidisciplinary care.
• Maintain strict patient confidentiality and protect clinical records, observing hospital policies, KMPDC regulations, and data protection requirements.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Medical degree (MBChB or equivalent) from a recognised institution, followed by a Master’s degree in Internal Medicine.
• Fellowship in Gastroenterology from a recognised training centre or institution.
• Current licensure with the Kenya Medical and Dental Council and formal specialist recognition as a gastroenterologist by KMPDC.
• At least two years of post-fellowship experience within a high-volume gastroenterology and endoscopy unit.
• Proven proficiency in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic techniques.
• Prior involvement in teaching, supervising, or mentoring medical officers and endoscopy staff is considered an advantage.
