Job Description

Role Overview

This position places you at the center of a busy otolaryngology department, where you will be responsible for diagnosing and treating a broad range of ear, nose, and throat conditions. Your daily work will span outpatient consultations, surgical procedures, and collaboration with allied health teams, all while ensuring that every patient receives thorough, empathetic care. This role matters because it directly shapes clinical outcomes for patients with complex ENT disorders and supports the wider hospital’s reputation for specialist surgical excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patient assessment and diagnosis: Carry out comprehensive consultations for patients presenting with ENT symptoms, review their medical histories, and decide on appropriate diagnostic investigations.
  • Treatment planning: Develop and implement individualized care plans covering medical therapy, lifestyle adjustments, and surgical options for conditions such as chronic otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis, laryngeal disease, and head and neck pathology.
  • Surgical and procedural work: Perform a wide range of ENT operations, including tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, myringotomy, endoscopic sinus surgery, and oncological resections, alongside minor procedures and emergency interventions.
  • Diagnostic procedures and audiology: Undertake specialized ENT diagnostic testing and supervise the audiology department to ensure integrated hearing and balance care for patients.
  • Multidisciplinary coordination: Work closely with anesthesiologists, radiologists, pathologists, and other clinicians to optimize surgical outcomes and manage complex cases effectively.
  • Mentorship and training: Guide medical officers, nurses, audiologists, and junior clinical staff, while actively participating in continuous medical education and departmental quality improvement initiatives.
  • Patient experience and confidentiality: Deliver compassionate, patient-centered communication throughout the care journey, while strictly protecting patient records in line with institutional policies and Kenyan medical regulations.
  • Compliance and safety: Uphold ethical standards, maintain meticulous documentation, and promote best practices in patient safety in accordance with the Kenya Medical and Dental Council and hospital guidelines.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) plus a Master’s degree in ENT Surgery or an equivalent surgical specialization from a recognized institution.
  • Registration: Full registration as a Medical/Specialist Practitioner with the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council, including a valid practicing license and a Recognition Certificate as a Specialist.
  • Experience: At least one year of post-specialization practice in a high-volume ENT surgical unit, with demonstrated proficiency in both diagnostic and operative ENT procedures.
  • Teaching background: Prior experience in training or mentoring medical personnel is strongly preferred.
  • Clinical competencies: Strong diagnostic and analytical skills specific to otolaryngology, with the ability to manage both common and complex ENT disorders.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills: Excellent written and verbal communication, enabling effective work in a multi-ethnic environment and respectful collaboration with patients and colleagues.
  • Technical aptitude: Comfortable using computer applications and modern medical IT systems for clinical documentation and decision support.
  • Professional integrity: Commitment to patient-centered care, clinical excellence, constitutional values, and the ethical standards expected of a specialist practitioner.
  • Multidisciplinary teamwork: Ability to contribute effectively within a hospital-wide care team and adapt to the demands of a busy surgical environment.
