Consultant Dermatologist

Role Overview

This position places a qualified Dermatology Specialist at the heart of a busy hospital dermatology unit in Kenya, where you will handle the full spectrum of skin health—from first consultation and diagnosis to complex treatment plans and ongoing chronic care. Your day-to-day work directly shapes patient outcomes, combining clinical precision with compassionate communication while also contributing to departmental growth through teaching, research, and quality improvement. You will act as the go-to expert for both routine and complex dermatological cases, coordinating with surgical, pathological, and radiological teams to ensure every patient receives integrated, safe, and ethical care.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough patient evaluations for skin conditions, gathering detailed medical histories and ordering or interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests to reach accurate dermatological diagnoses.
• Manage a broad caseload of conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne, skin cancers, and other complex or rare disorders through evidence-based, individualized treatment strategies.
• Design and adjust long-term care plans for patients with persistent or recurring skin diseases, incorporating medication management, lifestyle guidance, and timely referrals for surgical or other specialist input.
• Perform hands-on dermatological procedures including skin biopsies, lesion excisions, and minor surgical interventions, with laser therapy skills considered a valuable bonus for the role.
• Integrate psychosocial support into routine clinical practice, recognising the significant emotional burden skin conditions can place on patients and addressing it through empathetic communication and referral pathways.
• Collaborate closely with surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals to align treatment approaches and secure the best possible clinical outcomes.
• Actively participate in Continuous Medical Education, departmental conferences, and professional workshops while also mentoring junior medical officers, dermatology fellows, and clinical staff.
• Maintain rigorous patient confidentiality and data security at all times, adhering to hospital policies, Kenyan medical council regulations, and national data protection laws.
• Drive health education initiatives, participate in disease surveillance and prevention programs, and contribute to research and quality improvement projects within the dermatology department.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Kenyan citizenship is mandatory, and candidates must satisfy the requirements of Chapter Six of the Kenyan Constitution.
• A Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from a recognized institution, followed by a Master’s degree in Dermatology from an accredited university.
• Full registration as a Medical or Specialist Practitioner with the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council, along with a valid practicing license and a Specialist Recognition Certificate from the Kenya Medical Practitioners’ and Dentists’ Council.
• At least one year of post-specialization experience working within a high-volume dermatology unit, with demonstrable competence in both diagnostic and therapeutic dermatologic procedures.
• Proven ability to train and mentor medical personnel is strongly preferred, reflecting a commitment to building capacity in the wider clinical team.
• Strong diagnostic and analytical skills specific to dermatology, combined with excellent interpersonal and communication abilities for working effectively in a multi-ethnic environment and respecting diversity.
• Proficiency in computer applications and modern medical information systems, enabling accurate record-keeping and efficient use of digital health tools.
• A clear commitment to patient-centered care, clinical excellence, and the constitutional values outlined in Articles 10 and 232 of the Kenyan Constitution.
• Ability to work productively within a multidisciplinary healthcare setting, including performing forensic and medico-legal services as required and coordinating surveillance, prevention, and control programs for dermatological diseases.
