Role Overview
The Communications Intern works inside the Kenya country team, turning programme results into material that donors, policymakers, journalists and community audiences can actually pick up and use. Day to day, that means interviewing people, writing and formatting briefs and stories, chasing photographs and consent forms, and keeping the office content library current so colleagues around the organisation can draw on it. The role matters because a steady flow of accurate, well-told evidence is what keeps the country programme visible, credible and funded.
Key Responsibilities
- Write and lay out knowledge products — policy briefs, data summaries, case studies and human-interest features — working from technical input supplied by programme colleagues.
- Draft and edit advocacy and knowledge-sharing content, including articles, newsletters and social posts that showcase the country programme's work.
- Interview community members, partners and frontline staff to gather first-person accounts of impact, then shape those conversations into stories suited to both Kenyan and global audiences.
- Coordinate photography and video collection with programme teams, secure written informed consent from everyone featured, and upload finished assets to the organisation's cloud-based media library.
- Act as a brand custodian for the Kenya office — reviewing materials against global branding rules and arranging refresher sessions with the global marketing and branding team when needed.
- Run the country office's social media and digital presence, and maintain a shared repository of photographs, footage and written pieces so content stays organised and reusable across teams.
- Support the Country Director and programme staff in producing donor-facing materials such as fact sheets, progress reports, presentations and pitch documents.
- Track funding and partnership leads — calls for proposals, donor engagement moments and prospective collaborations that fit the Kenya strategy — and document project results that strengthen relationships with current and prospective funders.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline such as English, marketing or communications, advertising, or public relations.
- Strong writing, editing and storytelling ability, with the range to shift register between community audiences, donors, government officials and media.
- Demonstrated interest in communications, public relations, business development or fundraising within the NGO or development sector; internship or volunteer exposure is welcome.
- Ability to structure and present information clearly through reports, presentations and digital channels.
- Confidence managing social media accounts and producing basic digital content; graphic design, photography or video editing skills are an added advantage.
- Strong organisational habits — able to juggle several assignments, hit deadlines and keep a close eye on detail.
- Collaborative team player with solid interpersonal and networking skills, and the initiative to work independently when required.
- Fluency in English and Kiswahili, both spoken and written.
- Owning work and building trust: produces honest, well-grounded content, follows through on commitments to programme teams, leadership and external audiences, and takes responsibility for the accuracy and brand integrity of what goes out.
- Adapting and navigating change: adjusts plans, messaging and channels as programme needs, audience feedback, news cycles and partner requirements shift, and stays solution-focused under short timelines.
- Getting work done: converts communication strategy into finished outputs by sequencing tasks, meeting deadlines and holding contributors and suppliers to their deliverables.
- Working together and growing others: builds relationships across programme staff, leadership, partners, media and global communications counterparts, exchanges feedback constructively and helps new staff and consultants learn brand and communication standards.
