Job Description

Role Overview

This role sits at the centre of the laboratory and the clinical team: you will validate complex test results, act on urgent findings, and guide treating physicians on the most appropriate investigations. By ensuring every result is accurate, clearly interpreted, and delivered within required timeframes, you directly influence diagnosis, treatment decisions, and patient safety. You will also help maintain the laboratory's accreditation standing through rigorous quality control, audits, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review, interpret, validate, and release diagnostic results across haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, immunology, and molecular diagnostics, prioritising urgent and abnormal findings for immediate clinical action.
  • Serve as the go-to consultant for clinicians on test selection, result interpretation, and complex or discrepant laboratory findings.
  • Oversee day-to-day pathology service delivery, including histopathology and cytopathology where applicable, ensuring that standard operating procedures are followed and that results meet clinical need.
  • Monitor key performance indicators such as turnaround times, critical result reporting, and quality control data, initiating corrective actions when targets are missed.
  • Supervise the laboratory's participation in external quality assurance schemes and manage the documentation, review, and response to scheme reports.
  • Lead and contribute to internal audits, incident investigations, root-cause analyses, and quality improvement projects.
  • Support antimicrobial stewardship programmes by providing microbiological expertise and ensuring sensitivity results are communicated effectively to prescribers.
  • Teach, mentor, and supervise junior medical staff, technologists, and students, and take part in multidisciplinary meetings, clinical audits, and continuing medical education sessions.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Education: MBChB or an equivalent medical degree from a recognised institution, plus an MMed or equivalent postgraduate qualification in General Pathology or Clinical Pathology.
  • Registration & Licensing: Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) as a specialist pathologist, with a valid and current practising licence.
  • Experience: At least five years of post-specialisation practice in a hospital or accredited medical laboratory, with demonstrated competence in diagnostic interpretation and laboratory management.
  • Additional Expertise: Experience in histopathology and cytopathology is an added advantage and will be considered favourably.
  • Clinical & Professional Skills: Strong diagnostic reasoning, sound clinical judgement, and an uncompromising commitment to patient safety, quality assurance, and evidence-based practice.
  • Communication & Leadership: Excellent written and verbal communication, interpersonal agility across multidisciplinary teams, and the ability to lead improvement initiatives, resolve problems, and uphold high professional integrity.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous approach to reporting, documentation, and quality monitoring, with a proactive attitude toward continuous professional development and regulatory compliance.
