Role Overview
As an Optometry/Ophthalmology Clinical Officer at Nairobi Adventist Hospital, you will be a frontline provider in the eye care unit, responsible for assessing vision, diagnosing common ocular conditions, and guiding patients toward the right treatment pathway. Your daily work directly shapes patient outcomes, from routine eye health checks to identifying cases that require urgent specialist intervention. You will also contribute to community outreach efforts, helping the hospital extend quality eye care beyond its walls.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform comprehensive eye examinations, including visual acuity testing, refraction, and ocular health assessments.
- Diagnose and manage common eye conditions within the approved scope of optometry and ophthalmology practice.
- Prescribe corrective lenses and other optical aids where clinically appropriate and within legal authority.
- Identify patients with complex or sight-threatening conditions and make timely referrals to specialist eye care services.
- Provide patient education on eye hygiene, disease prevention, and the importance of regular vision screening.
- Document all consultations and treatment plans accurately in patient records, maintaining strict confidentiality.
- Operate, calibrate, and care for optometry equipment to ensure reliable diagnostic results and infection control.
- Take part in community eye screening drives and outpatient outreach initiatives to improve access to eye care.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery with specialized training in Optometry or Ophthalmology from a recognized institution.
- Valid registration and an active practicing license from the relevant professional regulatory body.
- More than three years of hands-on experience in an eye clinic, eye department, or hospital setting.
- Strong clinical assessment skills with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
- A patient-centred approach, with attention to detail and commitment to professional and ethical standards.
