Job Description

Role Overview

This position places you at the frontline of primary healthcare delivery within a busy health facility, where you will be responsible for the full cycle of patient care—from initial consultation and diagnosis through treatment, monitoring, and referral. Your work directly supports the facility’s mission to provide accessible, high-quality clinical services while also contributing to community health programs, disease surveillance, and the training of future clinical officers. Day to day, you will split your time between outpatient and inpatient care, emergency response, surgical procedures within your scope, and documentation duties that ensure both clinical accountability and legal compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including history taking, physical examination, and differential diagnosis of acute and chronic conditions.
  • Order and interpret laboratory and imaging investigations, using results to guide evidence-based treatment plans and management decisions.
  • Perform medical and surgical procedures aligned to your training and scope of practice, ensuring strict adherence to safety and asepsis protocols.
  • Carry out ward rounds, monitor patient progress, and initiate timely referrals to higher-level facilities or specialists when cases exceed local capacity.
  • Implement clinical service procedures, quality assurance standards, and medico-legal guidelines in all aspects of patient care and documentation.
  • Participate in disease surveillance, outbreak control, and public health management activities, including community outreach and school health services.
  • Provide counseling and health education to patients, families, and communities on disease prevention, treatment adherence, and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Lead or support health management teams at level 3 facilities, convening committee meetings, compiling clinical reports, and analysing facility data to improve service delivery.
  • Supervise, coach, and mentor clinical students, interns, and junior staff on attachment, providing constructive feedback and practical skills training.
  • Prepare accurate medico-legal reports and maintain detailed patient records in accordance with professional and institutional standards.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Medicine from a recognized institution; or a Bachelor’s Degree in Community Health and Development, Psychology, Public Health, Medical Education, Health Systems Management, Health Profession Education, Medical Sociology, Comprehensive Ophthalmology and Cataract Surgery, Sports Medicine, or Health Promotion, combined with a Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery or its equivalent.
  • Certificate of Registration from the Clinical Officers’ Council.
  • Valid Professional Practice License from the Clinical Officers’ Council.
  • Demonstrated clinical competency in diagnosis, treatment, emergency care, and surgical procedures within the scope of a clinical officer.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for patient counseling, teamwork, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • Ability to work under pressure in both routine and emergency settings, with sound judgment and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in maintaining clinical records, compiling reports, and using basic health information systems.
  • Prior experience in a health facility setting, including hospital or community-based clinical work, is strongly preferred.
