The "Sisters of Mercy" first set up a 60 bed general hospital to cater mainly for the poor, indigenous Kenyans, with the primary mission being general healthcare. The colonial authorities granted 12 acres of land in a swampy, mosquito-infested area, which has since become the Industrial Area of Nairobi. In 1970, a 60-bed maternity ward was opened with antenatal, postnatal and immunization clinics attached in order to upgrade the quality of maternity healthcare available to the poorer segments of the Nairobi population. In 1972, in recognition of the contribution of the hospital in training midwives to assist births in rural areas, Mater was chartered as a School of Midwifery. Job Description

Role Overview

This position is for a nursing and midwifery educator who will deliver structured academic instruction and practical clinical training to student nurses. You will spend your time both in the classroom and on hospital wards, guiding learners through core theory and supporting them as they apply those concepts in real patient care settings. Your work is essential to producing competent, safety-conscious nursing graduates who meet national professional standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and deliver interactive classroom lessons covering nursing sciences, midwifery practice, patient assessment, and care planning across the full training curriculum.
  • Lead clinical skills demonstrations and supervise students in simulation labs, maternity units, and hospital wards to build their hands-on competence.
  • Design examinations, practical assessments, and evaluation rubrics, then mark and record student performance with accuracy and fairness.
  • Mentor students individually or in small groups, identifying learning gaps and offering targeted support to help them succeed.
  • Develop teaching aids, clinical case studies, and learner-centred activities that link theory to everyday nursing and midwifery practice.
  • Monitor student attendance, progress, and clinical placement logs, and provide regular written reports to academic supervisors.
  • Collaborate with ward managers and clinical preceptors to ensure structured placement experiences for learners.
  • Contribute to faculty meetings, curriculum reviews, and internal quality improvement initiatives while keeping your own professional knowledge current.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Hold a KRN, KRM, KRN/M, KRCHN, or BScN nursing or midwifery qualification.
  • Be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) and carry a valid practising licence.
  • Have at least two years of active combined classroom and clinical teaching experience in nursing or midwifery.
  • Possess solid computer proficiency, including word processing, spreadsheets, and learning management systems.
  • Demonstrate strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills suitable for guiding adult learners.
  • Specialisation in KRCCN, KRNN, or KRPON will be considered an added advantage.
