Role Overview
This is a field- and desk-based sales role where you will put your general insurance expertise to work for individuals and small to medium-sized businesses. Your main focus will be listening to each client’s circumstances, identifying their risk exposure, and converting that insight into the right motor, household, health, or liability cover. This role matters because the quality of your advice and the accuracy of the policies you place directly determines how well clients are protected when a claim actually happens — and it shapes the insurer’s reputation for trustworthy, local knowledge.
Key Responsibilities
- Prospect for new business through a structured sales pipeline, using referrals, existing client networks, and targeted outreach to achieve monthly premium and commission targets.
- Carry out thorough fact-finding conversations with clients to map their personal and commercial insurance needs, including fleet vehicles, shop premises, professional liability, and family protection.
- Present and explain policy options in plain language, drawing on a strong understanding of cover limits, exclusions, deductibles, and add-on endorsements.
- Prepare accurate quotations and proposal documents, ensuring clients understand exactly what is covered before they commit to a purchase.
- Work closely with underwriters to negotiate terms and pricing, submitting risk information and responding to any additional questions they raise.
- Manage renewals for an existing portfolio, reviewing policy performance, comparing current coverage against client needs, and recommending adjustments to retain accounts.
- Process policy changes, endorsements, and claims notifications promptly, keeping detailed records in line with both company procedure and insurance institute conduct standards.
- Stay current on local market trends, regulatory changes, and new insurance products, so you can proactively inform clients of gaps in their existing cover.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in a business-related field (e.g. commerce, finance, business administration, or management).
- A recognised professional insurance qualification — ACII, CII, or IIK — or clear evidence of working toward one.
- At least 2 years of hands-on experience selling general insurance products (motor, property, health, travel, or marine) to retail or corporate clients.
- Demonstrated familiarity with the local insurance landscape, including knowledge of active underwriters, standard policy wordings, premium rates, and common claims patterns.
- Strong knowledge of local regulatory requirements relating to general insurance, including policy disclosure and client data protection.
- Proven ability to discuss insurance terms such as sub-limits, exclusions, and conditions in a way that a non-expert client will understand.
- Comfort using customer relationship management tools and Microsoft Office for quotations, reports, and client correspondence.
- Good negotiation and persistence skills, with a track record of achieving sales targets rather than only receiving inbound enquiries.
