Role Overview
This role leads the underwriting and business development function for a regional branch, balancing growth targets with disciplined risk selection. Every day involves direct client engagement, portfolio monitoring, and coordination with unit managers to ensure service delivery stays within agreed standards. The position is central to protecting the company’s loss ratio while expanding market share through practical, customer-focused insurance solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and sustain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients, converting these into measurable business growth and retention.
- Maintain and continuously improve underwriting service standards, manuals, and workflows to align with the customer service charter and evolving market conditions.
- Manage the regional portfolio through sound underwriting decisions, ensuring the business mix meets targets while keeping the loss ratio under control.
- Monitor outstanding premiums and enforce credit control policies to minimise financial risk and maintain healthy cash flow.
- Implement internal and external audit recommendations within agreed deadlines, ensuring full compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Identify market gaps and work with product development teams to launch innovative insurance solutions that respond to customer needs.
- Supervise unit managers across life, general insurance, and asset management operations, providing guidance to achieve branch objectives.
- Prepare departmental budgets and business plans, participating in management meetings, projects, and committees as assigned by the head office.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Insurance or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Professional certification in insurance, specifically ACII or AIIK, is required.
- At least 6 years of relevant experience in underwriting, business development, or insurance operations, with increasing responsibility.
- Proven sales aptitude and the ability to build rapport with clients, brokers, and internal stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to facilitate collaboration across departments and lead teams effectively.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret data, assess risk, and make decisions that balance commercial growth with prudent underwriting discipline.
- Experience supervising staff or unit managers and driving performance against key indicators is preferred.
