Role Overview

As the Boiler Shift In-charge, you will oversee the safe and efficient operation of boilers, turbines, generators, and auxiliary equipment during your assigned shift. Reporting to the Lead Cogen, you will supervise a team of operators, coordinate with engineering and maintenance on load management and outages, and respond immediately to emergencies. Your leadership directly impacts plant reliability, employee safety, and consistent steam/electrical production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct shift operations of boilers, turbines, generators, and all auxiliary systems, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards.
  • Monitor and adjust hourly steam and electrical loads, coordinating unit start-ups, shutdowns, and load changes with the engineering team.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot operating problems in real time, documenting issues in sufficient detail to expedite repairs and prevent recurrence.
  • Plan and supervise planned and unplanned maintenance, including fuel feed hopper levels, fuel mixing, and log yard operations using front-end loaders.
  • Conduct daily, weekly, and monthly performance reviews of plant operations, including employee evaluations and manpower utilization.
  • Train and mentor shift operators on job competencies, conduct on-the-job training, and ensure all personnel meet mandatory utility system training requirements.
  • Maintain accurate operational records, prepare daily shift reports, and facilitate morning management meetings to share performance metrics and handover details.
  • Enforce good housekeeping practices across the plant, assign routine cleaning duties, and respond immediately to emergency situations.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering with a plant option.
  • 5–10 years of hands-on experience in boiler and cogen plant operations, with at least 2–3 years in a supervisory or shift-in-charge role.
  • Strong technical knowledge of boiler, turbine, and generator controls, auxiliary equipment, and fuel handling systems.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot operational problems under pressure and coordinate with maintenance, technical, and engineering departments.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, and manpower management skills to set clear goals and hold personnel accountable.
  • Proficiency in MS Windows, SAP, and AutoCAD for reporting, inventory, and maintenance planning.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to train operators, lead teams, and collaborate across shifts.
  • Demonstrated leadership with a strong focus on safety culture, emergency response, and continuous improvement.
