It was established through the Alupe Legal Order Gazette Notice No 163 of 24th July 2015. Its Council was constituted vide special gazette notice No.136 of 7th November 2016. It was started following a request by the then Busia North community to the then President of Kenya H.E Hon Mwai Kibaki when he visited the area on 18th September 2007. Subsequently it started as the Alupe Campus of Moi University in 2008. The University College has 200 acres of land in Busia County. It is located 7 kilometres from Busia town on the Busia-Malaba Road. It is 23 kilometres from Malaba town. It is situated in Teso South constituency of Busia County and is the only Public University in the Busia County. It neighbours Uganda and therefore will expand the international student exchange programs including cross border training and research in the East African region. It will work with the neighbouring KEMRI, KALRO and LBDA scientists in teaching, research and service provision to the Kenyan population and in the region. Job Description

Role Overview

This university teaching position focuses on delivering high-quality instruction in Physical Therapy at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The successful candidate will design and lead lecture series, practical sessions, and clinical placements while actively pursuing research and scholarly publication. Day-to-day work includes preparing course materials, assessing student performance, supervising Master’s and PhD candidates, and contributing to departmental curriculum development. This role is central to advancing the university’s academic mission and producing competent physiotherapy professionals who meet national healthcare needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver theoretical and practical instruction in core and elective physical therapy courses across multiple programmes, using varied pedagogical methods that integrate recent evidence-based practice.
  • Develop, review, and update course syllabi, lesson plans, and assessment tools to maintain alignment with Physiotherapy Council of Kenya (PCK) standards and university academic regulations.
  • Conduct original research in physiotherapy or related disciplines, leading to publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national or international conferences.
  • Supervise undergraduate research projects and postgraduate theses (Master’s and doctoral level), providing timely feedback and mentoring on study design, data analysis, and scholarly writing.
  • Participate in departmental and faculty committees, contributing to policy development, quality assurance reviews, and accreditation processes.
  • Engage in community outreach and professional development activities, such as organising continuing education workshops for practising physiotherapists or collaborating with healthcare partners on clinical services.
  • Administer and invigilate examinations, process grades, and maintain accurate student records in line with university deadlines and data protection requirements.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from a recognised and accredited university, plus a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited institution.
  • Must either hold a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing, Physical Therapy, or a closely related health discipline from a recognised university, or be registered and actively pursuing one with evidence of substantial progress (interim registration acceptable).
  • A valid Annual Practicing License issued by the Physiotherapy Council of Kenya (PCK), with no history of disciplinary action.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer applications relevant to teaching, research, and administration (e.g., statistical software, learning management systems, presentation tools).
  • Evidence of potential for university teaching, research, and scholarly publication – examples may include experience as a graduate teaching assistant, co-authored conference papers, or published articles in refereed journals.
  • For foreign-earned qualifications, candidates must have their certificates certified by the Commission for University Education (CUE) before appointment.
  • At least three years of clinical physiotherapy practice or teaching experience in a recognised institution is preferred.
