Role Overview
This role sits at the centre of the actuarial reporting engine for a life insurance business, owning the calculations, checks and written analysis that turn raw policy and experience data into valuation results, IFRS 17 figures and regulatory returns. Day to day it means running reporting cycles, interrogating why numbers moved, stress-testing assumptions behind products and reserves, and making sure every figure handed to finance, auditors or the regulator can be traced back to documented evidence. The work matters because these outputs shape how the business understands its liabilities, prices future products and demonstrates solvency and compliance to external parties.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute and document monthly, quarterly and annual valuation cycles across group and individual life business, reconciling actuarial outputs against finance records and resolving differences before sign-off.
- Produce IFRS 17 results and disclosures, including fulfilment cash flows, risk adjustment and contractual service margin, and write movement commentary that pinpoints the drivers behind material shifts in balances.
- Build, test and maintain the models used for liability valuation, pricing and reporting, working within change-control and model governance rules and escalating limitations or control weaknesses as they emerge.
- Conduct experience investigations into mortality, withdrawals, claims and expenses, then convert the findings into recommendations on assumption updates and product profitability.
- Validate the data feeding calculations — reconciling sources, chasing anomalies and maintaining a clear record of checks performed, exceptions raised and how each was closed out.
- Contribute to product development and reviews through profitability modelling, sensitivity testing and validation of new products configured in administration and valuation systems.
- Prepare actuarial returns and submissions for the insurance regulator, appointed actuary and other authorities, and assemble the evidence needed for audits, inspections and information requests.
- Deliver actuarial projections for budgeting, forecasting and long-term planning, including expense allocation analysis and scenario work, while partnering with finance, risk, investments, operations and IT colleagues and mentoring junior analysts where delegated.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in actuarial science, statistics, mathematics, engineering or a comparable quantitative discipline.
- At least seven actuarial examinations passed with a recognised professional body such as IFoA, ASSA, SOA or equivalent, with ongoing progress toward full qualification.
- A minimum of five years' actuarial experience gained in life insurance, broader financial services or actuarial consulting.
- Demonstrated hands-on work in actuarial valuation and financial reporting, ideally including IFRS 17, alongside experience investigations.
- Exposure to regulatory reporting requirements, actuarial governance and the modelling or reporting platforms that support them.
- Strong data analysis and interpretation skills, paired with the rigour to document assumptions, controls and conclusions.
- Effective written and verbal communication — able to translate technical results for non-actuarial audiences and escalate judgement calls through the right channels.
- Commercial acumen, analytical thinking, close attention to detail, sound planning and a genuinely collaborative working style.
