Role Overview
The Accountant manages daily finance operations for a Nairobi-based provider of laboratory testing, inspection, and consultancy services. Reporting to the Finance and Administration Manager, this middle-management role supports reliable financial reporting and controls across supplier payments, client billing, payroll, statutory obligations, and the tracking of laboratory supplies and assets.
Key Responsibilities
- Check supplier invoices against purchase orders, delivery records, quotations, and approved contracts; maintain vendor accounts, reconcile balances, arrange payments, and investigate discrepancies.
- Prepare cost estimates for testing, training, audits, and consultancy assignments, then issue tax invoices against approved quotes, client orders, and confirmed service delivery.
- Monitor outstanding client accounts, follow up on late payments, and prepare debtor ageing reports for management.
- Maintain the general ledger and accounting records, prepare monthly management accounts, and complete bank, supplier, and client balance reconciliations.
- Compile monthly payroll and calculate, file, and remit applicable statutory deductions and obligations, including PAYE, NSSF, SHA, Housing Levy, NITA, and VAT.
- Keep records for laboratory reagents, chemicals, consumables, PPE, and office supplies; verify deliveries, support stock counts, investigate variances, and update the fixed asset register.
- Reconcile petty cash, travel advances, transport claims, and operating expenses in QuickBooks; check purchase requests against budgets and approval procedures.
- Maintain supporting records for audits and monitor service contracts, leases, and licence renewal dates to help identify upcoming financial and operational requirements.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related business discipline.
- Fully qualified Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K).
- At least five years of general accounting experience, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and reconciliations.
- Practical experience with QuickBooks and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience in a laboratory, healthcare, technical consultancy, manufacturing, or other operations-focused environment is an advantage.
- Strong analytical skills, with the ability to reconcile complex accounts, investigate discrepancies, and identify control or process gaps.
- Clear, professional communication skills and the ability to coordinate with technical teams, procurement colleagues, clients, suppliers, and auditors.
- Demonstrated integrity and a dependable approach to financial controls and compliance.
What We Offer / Why Join
This is a full-time, on-site position in Nairobi, Kenya, with a monthly salary of Ksh 70,000–75,000. The role offers broad responsibility across finance operations in a laboratory testing and consultancy services setting.
