Microsoft Consumer Marketing Chief Yusuf Mehdi to Leave After 35 Years
May 23 -
Yusuf Mehdi Announces Departure From Microsoft
Yusuf Mehdi, executive vice president and consumer chief marketing officer at Microsoft, is leaving the company after a 35-year career. Mehdi shared his decision in an internal memo on Thursday, confirming that he will depart next year. Until 2027, he will continue overseeing marketing for Windows, Copilot for consumers, and the Microsoft 365 consumer business.
In his memo, Mehdi stated: “As I thought about this decision, one thing was crystal clear: I want to ensure I have the time and space to set the team - and our mission - up for continued success. We are in the middle of an incredibly important moment for Microsoft and for our customers.”
Transition Plan and Successor
According to GeekWire, Mehdi is working closely with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and chief marketing officer Takeshi Numoto on a transition plan. However, the company has not yet named a successor. Mehdi is the latest in a series of veteran executives departing Microsoft in recent months.
Mehdi's Legacy at Microsoft: From Windows to AI
Mehdi began his Microsoft journey as an intern in the 1990s. Over his career, he worked on the launches of Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, and led marketing for Internet Explorer. He also spent over a decade running Microsoft's search and online businesses, including the launch of Bing. Later, he helped launch Xbox One, Windows 10, and Copilot Plus PCs, becoming the public face of Microsoft's consumer efforts.
Key Contributions
- Windows 3.1 and Windows 95 – Early career marketing successes
- Internet Explorer – Led marketing during the browser wars
- Bing – Helped launch and grow Microsoft's search engine
- Xbox One – Key role in gaming console launch
- Copilot Plus PCs – Spearheaded AI-powered PC marketing
A Wave of Executive Departures
Mehdi's exit follows Rajesh Jha, former EVP of Microsoft's experiences and devices group, who announced his retirement in March after more than 35 years. Jha's departure triggered a restructuring of Microsoft's upper management for Windows, Office, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and more. These changes reflect a broader shift as Microsoft evolves its leadership under the AI era.
What's Next for Microsoft's Consumer Marketing?
Mehdi's departure raises questions about the future of Microsoft's consumer marketing strategy. With AI at the forefront—especially Copilot and Copilot Plus PCs—the company needs strong leadership to maintain momentum. Mehdi reflected on his career: “I’ve had the privilege of being a part of some of the most consequential shifts in technology - from the rise of Windows and the early Internet, to search, gaming, devices, and now one of the most profound platform transitions yet: AI.”
As Microsoft searches for a new consumer marketing chief, the tech world will watch closely to see who steps into Mehdi's shoes during this pivotal moment.
