Google Expands SynthID and C2PA Deepfake Detection to Chrome and Search

Google Brings SynthID and C2PA Detection to Chrome and Search
Google is expanding its AI detection capabilities to Chrome and Search, aiming to make it easier for users to identify deepfakes and manipulated media. Announced at Google I/O 2026, the updates focus on SynthID — Google DeepMind's invisible watermarking technology — and C2PA content credentials. These tools will help people understand how online content was created or altered.
SynthID Verification Now Available in Search
Starting today, Google Search features like Google Lens, AI Mode, and Circle to Search can verify images carrying SynthID markers. These markers indicate the image was generated using Google's AI tools. Users can upload or select images to learn about their origin. Chrome support for SynthID verification is expected to roll out in the coming months, powered by Gemini. Users will be able to right-click or circle an image and ask, "Is this made with AI?" or "Is this AI generated?"
What SynthID Verification Covers
- Image content: Currently supported in Search and upcoming Chrome integration.
- Video and audio: Already available through the Gemini app, with plans to expand to Chrome and Search later.
Streamlined Deepfake Detection with C2PA Content Credentials
Google's verification interfaces will now also check for C2PA Content Credentials alongside SynthID markers. This allows users to check both provenance systems from a single interface, eliminating the need to switch between Gemini and dedicated C2PA checker portals. C2PA verification is rolling out to the Gemini app today, with Search and Chrome support following soon.
Google Expands C2PA Across Platforms
Google is embedding C2PA metadata on images taken with Pixel 10 phones and will soon add it to video files on Pixel 8, 9, and 10 devices. Additionally, Meta will start labeling camera-captured media on Instagram using C2PA, though details are pending confirmation. Support for SynthID watermarks is also expanding to AI content from OpenAI, Kakao, and ElevenLabs.
New AI Content Detection API for Businesses
Google is launching an AI content detection API for Google Cloud's Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. This API helps organizations identify AI-generated media, supporting both Google and third-party models. Google says the API will be fine-tuned based on feedback from trusted partners, offering businesses a powerful tool for backend operations like sorting feeds and preventing fraud, as well as user-facing features like fact-checking and labeling synthetic media.
What This Means for Users
These expansions make AI detection more accessible for everyday web users. The Chrome integration is particularly significant, as Chrome is the world's most used browser. Many online platforms don't natively label AI content, so this provides an easy workaround compared to manually uploading images to dedicated detection interfaces.
Key Takeaways
- Chrome expansion: Users can verify images directly in the browser without leaving the page.
- SynthID portal scrapped: Google has abandoned plans for a dedicated SynthID verification portal, meaning markers will only be identifiable on Gemini-powered platforms.
- Future plans: Google aims to expand verification to video and audio content in Chrome and Search.
