Boox’s New Smartphone-Sized E-Readers Come With A Steep Price Hike
Boox’s new smartphone-sized e-readers come with a steep price hike — and fans aren’t sure if the upgrades justw available in Chify it. The company’s latest pocket-friendly devices, the P6 Pro and P6 Pro Color, are noina, giving us a glimpse of their specs, design, and much higher prices before a global launch.
A Big Upgrade With Bigger Prices
The Boox P6 Pro features a 6.13-inch black-and-white Carta 1300 E Ink display, slightly better than what the $300 Palma 2 offered. But this time, it’s priced at around 2,799 Chinese yuan ($393). The P6 Pro Color, with its vibrant E Ink Kaleido 3 color screen, will cost even more — roughly 3,299 yuan ($463).
That’s a sharp jump compared to Boox’s previous generation. While launch discounts currently bring prices down to about $353 and $420, U.S. tariffs could push them even higher once they hit international markets.
Packed With Premium Features
Despite the price hike, Boox is adding some premium perks. Both models include 128GB of internal storage, expandable up to 2TB via microSD, and a 16MP camera. You’ll also find a 3,950mAh battery and a customized version of Android 13, making these e-readers feel more like compact tablets.
The P6 Pro Color gets an upgrade to 8GB of RAM (up from 6GB), and now supports a stylus for note-taking — a feature readers and students will appreciate. And in a first for Boox, these pocket-sized devices now support 5G connectivity via SIM card, letting users download books or apps without Wi-Fi.
Not Quite Smartphone Replacements
While these devices resemble mini smartphones, Boox hasn’t built them as phone alternatives. Unlike the Bigme Hibreak Pro, they can’t make calls — meaning their premium price tag may be a tougher sell for users expecting full mobile functionality.
Should You Buy Them?
If you’re a fan of on-the-go reading and want a device that bridges the gap between a smartphone and an e-reader, Boox’s latest lineup is impressive. However, with prices nearing $400–$460, casual readers may find the cost hard to justify — especially when similar e-readers from Kobo or Amazon remain more affordable.
