WSO2 Implementation Engineer – CIAM / API Management / Ballerina

Role Overview

As a WSO2 Implementation Engineer at Sybyl, you will sit at the centre of the Digital Integration & Identity Solutions practice in Nairobi, translating client requirements into working platforms built on WSO2 API Manager, Micro Integrator, and Identity Server. Day to day you will move between architecture discussions with stakeholders, hands-on coding of APIs and integration flows, and the container, pipeline, and monitoring plumbing that keeps those services running reliably in production. The work matters because Sybyl's telecom and banking clients depend on these integrations to move money, messages, and customer identities safely between systems that were never designed to talk to each other.

Key Responsibilities

• Run requirement-gathering sessions with client and internal stakeholders, then turn functional and non-functional needs into orchestration, API, and identity designs that can actually be built and operated.
• Install, configure, and tune WSO2 API Manager, Micro Integrator, and Identity Server across the full environment chain — development, UAT, production, and disaster recovery.
• Design and build the APIs and mediation flows that connect core banking platforms, ERPs, payment switches, billers, and external third parties.
• Package and deploy WSO2 components alongside custom services on Kubernetes or OpenShift, using Helm charts and containerised delivery rather than manual server builds.
• Expose services securely through REST, SOAP, and event-driven interfaces, applying OAuth2, JWT validation, and single sign-on patterns as standard.
• Develop supporting microservices and backend logic in Ballerina or Java/Spring Boot where the middleware alone is not enough.
• Deliver SWIFT connector work and interbank messaging integrations, including handling MT and MX message formats.
• Stand up CI/CD pipelines in Jenkins and GitLab, configure high availability and DR for hybrid deployments, and wire in ELK-based monitoring, logging, and audit trails.
• Implement CIAM capabilities — SSO, multi-factor authentication, self-service registration, federation, and adaptive authentication flows — while keeping designs aligned to GDPR and ISO 27001 obligations.
• Produce test cases (Cucumber or similar) to validate APIs, write architecture documents, technical specifications, and administration guides, and run training sessions for client technical teams before handing over to post-go-live support.

Requirements and Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a comparable technical discipline.
• Three to seven or more years of hands-on WSO2 middleware implementation, with production delivery experience across API Manager, Micro Integrator, and Identity Server.
• A track record of delivering CIAM solutions that cover single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, self-service registration, and identity federation.
• Deep familiarity with API management practice: lifecycle governance, security policy configuration, and rate limiting.
• Strong Java development skills paired with practical XML work — XSLT transformations, XPath expressions, and XML Schema design.
• Proven ability to deploy and operate platforms on Kubernetes and/or OpenShift.
• Experience with SWIFT connectors or comparable interbank and payment messaging integrations.
• Solid relational database skills in PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle DB.
• Exposure to Ballerina is a welcome addition, though not essential.
• Prior delivery work in telecommunications or banking environments is strongly preferred.
