Role Overview
This position involves welding and fabricating metal components and structures in a workshop or fleet maintenance environment, with a focus on vehicle bodies, trailers, and industrial equipment. Day-to-day work includes interpreting engineering drawings, cutting and shaping steel, and performing repairs on chassis, frames, tanks, and gates using MIG, TIG, arc, and gas welding. Quality and safety are paramount, as every joint must meet specifications while the workspace stays clean and compliant with regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply MIG, TIG, stick (SMAW), and oxy-fuel welding processes to fabricate and repair metal assemblies.
- Read and follow detailed engineering blueprints and fabrication plans to produce accurate components.
- Cut, grind, drill, and shape steel plates and sections using hand tools, grinders, and cutting torches.
- Repair damaged vehicle frames, trailer chassis, gates, platforms, and storage tanks to restore structural integrity.
- Inspect completed welds for strength, penetration, and finish; rework any defects as required.
- Maintain welding machines, gas regulators, and hoses; perform minor upkeep and report major faults.
- Manage consumables – electrodes, filler rods, shielding gases – ensuring proper storage and minimal waste.
- Follow all health and safety procedures, including proper use of PPE, fire prevention, and ventilation.
- Assist with emergency repair jobs on-site or in the field when needed, and keep logs of all completed work.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Certificate or diploma in Welding and Fabrication or a closely related technical field.
- Valid trade certification in welding (e.g., from a recognized body) is strongly preferred.
- At least three years of hands-on experience as a welder in a workshop, fleet maintenance, or heavy fabrication setting.
- Proven ability to work with various metals (mild steel, stainless, aluminum) and choose the correct welding method for each.
- Competence in cutting, grinding, drilling, and basic metal forming techniques.
- Solid understanding of welding safety standards, including proper ventilation, fire watch, and PPE.
- Good measurement and layout skills using tape measures, squares, and levels.
- Clean criminal record (Certificate of Good Conduct) is required for this role.
